1 Corinthians 15:30

1 Corinthians 15:30
And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?

My Notes

What Does 1 Corinthians 15:30 Mean?

"And why stand we in jeopardy every hour?" Paul asks a PRACTICAL question about the resurrection: if there IS no resurrection (the position some Corinthians hold, verse 12), why do the apostles RISK THEIR LIVES every hour? The question is logical: if death is FINAL, risking death is FOOLISH. The only reason to stand in jeopardy every hour is if death ISN'T final — if the resurrection makes the risk WORTH IT. The daily danger is the evidence of the daily belief.

The phrase "why stand we in jeopardy every hour" (ti kai hēmeis kindyneuomen pasan hōran — why also do we face danger every hour?) uses the APOSTOLIC EXPERIENCE as evidence: the apostles face danger EVERY HOUR — not occasionally, not sometimes, but CONTINUOUSLY. The danger is hourly. The risk is constant. The jeopardy is the permanent condition of the apostolic life. And the question is: WHY? What makes this risk RATIONAL?

The implied answer is: RESURRECTION makes it rational. If the dead are raised, then dying for Christ is TEMPORARY sacrifice for PERMANENT gain. If the dead are NOT raised, then dying for Christ is PERMANENT sacrifice for NOTHING. The daily jeopardy only makes sense if death isn't the end. The hourly danger only makes sense if there's something on the OTHER SIDE of death worth dying for.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What are you risking that only makes sense if the resurrection is real?
  • 2.How does the apostolic lifestyle of constant danger serve as EVIDENCE for resurrection-belief?
  • 3.What does 'every hour' jeopardy teach about faith being continuous, not occasional?
  • 4.What risk would you take — that you're currently avoiding — if you fully believed in the resurrection?

Devotional

WHY do we risk our lives EVERY HOUR — if there's no resurrection? The question is devastatingly practical: the apostolic life is CONSTANT DANGER. The risk is HOURLY. And the only reason it makes SENSE is if death isn't FINAL. If the dead aren't raised, the daily jeopardy is daily STUPIDITY. If the dead ARE raised, the daily jeopardy is daily INVESTMENT.

The 'why stand we in jeopardy every hour' uses the APOSTOLIC LIFESTYLE as resurrection-evidence: the apostles don't live safe lives. They face danger CONSTANTLY — every hour, without break, without safety-margin. The lifestyle of jeopardy is the PRACTICE of resurrection-faith. The willingness to die hourly PROVES the belief in rising ultimately. The risk-taking IS the testimony.

The 'every hour' (pasan hōran) makes the danger CONTINUOUS: not annually at certain missions. Not occasionally during specific crises. EVERY HOUR. The jeopardy is the CONSTANT companion of the apostolic calling. The danger doesn't take days off. The risk doesn't pause for weekends. The hourly jeopardy is the hourly expression of hourly faith in the resurrection.

The LOGIC is airtight: IF no resurrection → dying for Christ is PERMANENT LOSS (you're dead forever). IF resurrection → dying for Christ is TEMPORARY SACRIFICE for PERMANENT GAIN (you rise to eternal life). The apostles face hourly danger because they believe in the resurrection that makes the danger WORTHWHILE. The jeopardy is the BEHAVIORAL PROOF of the theological conviction. The risking is the believing made visible.

What are you risking that only makes sense if the resurrection is real?
