“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:”
My Notes
What Does 1 Corinthians 2:7 Mean?
Paul describes the gospel not as a straightforward announcement but as a mystery — mystērion, something hidden that has now been revealed. "The wisdom of God in a mystery" — theou sophian en mystēriō — is wisdom wrapped in concealment, truth that was present but invisible until God chose to unveil it. The hiding wasn't accidental. It was strategic.
"The hidden wisdom" — tēn apokekrymmenēn — perfect passive participle: wisdom that has been hidden and remains in a state of hiddenness until the appointed moment. And God "ordained" it — proōrisen — predetermined, set in advance, marked out beforehand — "before the world" — pro tōn aiōnōn, before the ages began. The wisdom that the cross represents was planned before the universe existed. The crucifixion wasn't Plan B. It was ordained before Genesis 1:1.
"Unto our glory" — eis doxan hēmōn — for our glorification, for our radiance, for our ultimate exaltation. The mystery was hidden before the ages and designed for our benefit. God conceived the plan before time, concealed it through the ages, and revealed it in Christ — all aimed at your glory. The mystery isn't God's glory alone (though it includes that). It's yours. The hidden plan was always about lifting you into something you couldn't have imagined.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where does your life look like defeat from every angle — and could the mystery be hidden in the apparent failure?
- 2.God concealed the plan from the powers that would have prevented it. How does that change the way you interpret seasons of confusion?
- 3.The mystery was ordained 'unto our glory.' Does it surprise you that God's hidden plan was aimed at your transformation, not just His reputation?
- 4.If the cross looked like foolishness and turned out to be the wisdom of God, what current 'foolishness' in your life might be hiding divine strategy?
Devotional
Before the world existed, God had a plan. He hid it. He concealed it through centuries of prophets, types, and shadows. And then He revealed it in the cross of Christ — and the plan was for your glory. Not just God's glory, though it's certainly that. Your glory. The mystery ordained before time was aimed at your transformation, your exaltation, your becoming something you couldn't have conceived on your own.
The hiddenness was intentional. Verse 8 explains: if the rulers of this age had understood the mystery, they wouldn't have crucified Christ. The concealment wasn't a failure of communication. It was a strategic operation. God hid the plan from the powers that would have prevented it if they'd understood it. The cross looked like defeat to everyone watching — to the Romans, to the religious leaders, to the disciples. And that's exactly what God intended. The wisdom was hidden in what looked like foolishness. The power was hidden in what looked like weakness. The victory was hidden in what looked like death.
If your life feels like a mystery right now — if God's plan is invisible, if the suffering makes no sense, if the path looks like defeat from every human angle — consider the possibility that the hiddenness is the strategy, not the failure. God has a history of concealing His best work inside things that look like His worst. The cross looked like the end of everything. It was the beginning of your glory. The mystery you can't see might be the plan that was ordained before the world — for you.
