1 Corinthians 4:15

1 Corinthians 4:15
For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

My Notes

What Does 1 Corinthians 4:15 Mean?

"Though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel." Paul distinguishes between instructors (paidagogos — tutors, guardians, disciplinarians) and fathers (pateres — parent-level relationship). Corinth has thousands of people willing to teach, correct, and guide. What they lack are spiritual fathers — people who gave them birth, who brought them into existence in Christ.

The word "begotten" (gennao) means to bring to birth, to generate, to produce offspring. Paul's relationship to the Corinthians isn't tutorial — it's parental. He didn't just teach them Christianity. He birthed them into it. The relationship is generative, not just educational.

The number "ten thousand" (myrioi) is a hyperbolic contrast with "not many." Instructors are abundant. Fathers are rare. The church has never lacked teachers. What it lacks are parents — people with the depth of relationship, the investment of time, and the generative love that produces spiritual life.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Who is your spiritual father — the person who didn't just teach you but birthed you into faith?
  • 2.What's the difference between instruction and spiritual parenting in your experience?
  • 3.Why are fathers so much rarer than instructors?
  • 4.Are you investing at the instructor level or the father level in someone's spiritual life?

Devotional

Ten thousand instructors. Not many fathers. Corinth has plenty of people willing to teach. What it doesn't have are people who gave birth — spiritual parents who brought them into existence in Christ.

The distinction between instructor and father is the difference between information and generation. An instructor gives you knowledge. A father gives you life. An instructor corrects your behavior. A father shaped your identity. An instructor can be replaced by any other instructor. A father can't — because the relationship is generative, not just educational.

Paul says: I didn't just teach you about Christ. I birthed you into Christ. Through the gospel, I became your father. The relationship is parental — which means it's permanent, personal, and non-transferable. You can switch instructors. You can't switch fathers.

The church has always had a surplus of instructors and a shortage of fathers. People willing to teach are everywhere. People willing to invest the generative, long-term, identity-shaping work of spiritual parenting are rare. The ten-thousand-to-few ratio hasn't changed in two thousand years.

Are you an instructor or a father? Do you give people information or do you give them life? Do you correct behavior or shape identity? The difference isn't skill — it's relationship. Fathers birth. Instructors inform. Both are needed. One is rare.

Who was your spiritual father — and are you being one for someone else?
