1 Kings 1:38

1 Kings 1:38
So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.

My Notes

What Does 1 Kings 1:38 Mean?

"So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon." The legitimate coronation is executed with precision: priest (Zadok), prophet (Nathan), military commander (Benaiah), and royal guard (Cherethites and Pelethites). Every dimension of authority is represented. The anointing isn't performed by one category alone — religious, prophetic, military, and security all participate.

The phrase "caused Solomon to ride" means Solomon doesn't mount the mule himself. He's placed on it. The coronation isn't self-initiated. Others lift him to the position. The king is made, not self-made. The community places Solomon where God designated him.

The descent to Gihon — "went down" — means the coronation procession moves downhill from the palace to the spring. The king descends before he's elevated. The movement is toward the water, toward the people, toward the public space. The coronation happens at the lowest point, not the highest.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Who placed you in your current position — God through community, or your own ambition?
  • 2.What does the convergence of priest, prophet, commander, and guard teach about legitimate authority?
  • 3.Why does the coronation happen at the low point (the spring) rather than the high point (the palace)?
  • 4.What's the difference between being placed on the mule and climbing on yourself?

Devotional

Priest. Prophet. Commander. Guard. They all go together. They put Solomon on the king's mule. They bring him to the spring. Every dimension of legitimate authority participates in the coronation that God authorized.

The team composition is the legitimacy's evidence: Zadok represents religious authority. Nathan represents prophetic authority. Benaiah represents military authority. The Cherethites and Pelethites represent security. No single category anoints alone. The legitimate coronation requires the convergence of every kind of authority God has established. The priest without the prophet is incomplete. The military without the religious is secular force. All four together: legitimate.

Solomon being placed on the mule — not climbing on himself — means the king receives the position from others. He doesn't self-appoint. The community lifts him. The priest, prophet, and commander put him where he belongs. The legitimate king is elevated by the community, not by his own ambition. Contrast this with Adonijah, who threw himself a party.

The downhill movement — descending to Gihon — means the coronation begins with humility. The king goes down before the kingdom goes up. The spring at the bottom, not the palace at the top, is where the anointing happens. The king's first royal ride is a descent.

Who puts you in your position — yourself or a community of legitimate authorities? Are you riding the mule someone placed you on, or throwing yourself a coronation party?
