- 2 Chronicles
- Chapter 3
- Verse 1
“Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Chronicles 3:1 Mean?
Solomon begins building the temple on Mount Moriah — the same mountain where Abraham bound Isaac for sacrifice (Genesis 22:2). The same location where death was narrowly avoided through divine provision now becomes the location where God's permanent presence will dwell. The geography connects sacrifice to sanctuary.
The identification of Moriah with the temple mount means the ram that replaced Isaac was offered on the same ground where the temple's altar would stand. Abraham's substitute sacrifice happened on the future site of all Israel's sacrifices. The story of substitution that saved Isaac foreshadows the entire sacrificial system.
The threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite — which David purchased after the plague of 2 Samuel 24 — adds another layer. A threshing floor is where grain is separated from chaff. A place of judgment (plague stopped here) becomes a place of worship (temple built here). Judgment, sacrifice, and worship converge on one mountain.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does the convergence of three stories (Abraham, David, Solomon) on one mountain make the geography feel providential?
- 2.How does the substitution theme (ram for Isaac, sacrifice for plague, temple for permanent atonement) build toward the cross?
- 3.What does the transformation (threshing floor → temple) teach about how God turns places of judgment into places of worship?
- 4.Does knowing the temple sits on the same ground as Abraham's near-sacrifice deepen your understanding of what happened there?
Devotional
Mount Moriah. Where Abraham bound Isaac. Where the angel stopped the plague. Where Solomon builds the temple. One mountain. Three stories. One purpose.
The geography is the theology. Mount Moriah isn't random. It's the place where Abraham raised the knife over Isaac and God provided a ram (Genesis 22). It's the place where David bought Ornan's threshing floor after a plague killed seventy thousand (2 Samuel 24). And now it's the place where Solomon builds the house of God.
The substitutionary sacrifice of the ram (Genesis 22) happened on the same ground where every subsequent sacrifice would be offered. Abraham's experience of divine provision became the permanent address of divine provision. The place where God said "I will provide" became the place where God provided — daily, for centuries, through the temple's sacrificial system.
The threshing floor adds the judgment layer. Threshing separates wheat from chaff. The plague that stopped at Ornan's floor was judgment halted by sacrifice (David offered there and the plague ceased). The same place where judgment stopped is the place where worship began.
Three stories converge: Abraham's near-sacrifice of Isaac (death averted by substitution). David's plague (judgment stopped by sacrifice). Solomon's temple (permanent worship established). Each story adds a layer: substitution → cessation of judgment → permanent dwelling. The mountain that saved Isaac from death, that stopped a plague in its tracks, becomes the mountain where God lives with His people.
One day, on a hill just outside this mountain, another substitute would die. The ultimate sacrifice. On the ridge connected to Moriah. Where it all started.
The mountain remembers. Every story it holds points to the cross.
