My Notes
What Does 2 Chronicles 31:12 Mean?
"And brought in the offerings and the tithes and the dedicated things faithfully: over which Cononiah the Levite was ruler, and Shimei his brother was the next." The FAITHFUL administration of the offerings: the people give abundantly, and Cononiah the Levite is appointed to manage the abundance FAITHFULLY. The word 'faithfully' (be'emunah — with faithfulness/trustworthiness) applies to the ADMINISTRATION of the gifts, not just the giving of them. The stewardship is as important as the sacrifice. The management of the offering must match the generosity of the offerer.
The phrase "brought in... faithfully" (hevi'u... be'emunah — they brought in with faithfulness) describes TRUSTWORTHY stewardship: the offerings are managed with integrity. No skimming. No misallocation. No favoritism. The administration is as holy as the offering. The handling of sacred resources requires sacred character. The back-end must match the front-end.
The appointment of CONONIAH as ruler over the offerings shows ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY: the abundance requires MANAGEMENT. Someone must be in charge. Someone must account for the grain, the wine, the oil. Someone must distribute fairly. The worship-system requires ADMINISTRATORS — people whose calling is the faithful management of other people's generosity.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What sacred resource needs more faithful administration in your community?
- 2.What does 'faithfully' modifying the ADMINISTRATION (not the giving) teach about the holiness of stewardship?
- 3.How does the worship-system needing MANAGERS as much as musicians describe the full scope of ministry?
- 4.What backup leadership — what 'Shimei next in line' — ensures continuity in your stewardship?
Devotional
The offerings come in ABUNDANTLY — and the ADMINISTRATION is FAITHFUL. The two go together: generous giving requires trustworthy management. The stewardship must match the sacrifice. The handling of sacred resources requires sacred character. FAITHFULLY is the qualifier that makes the system work.
CONONIAH is appointed to manage the overflow — a named person with a specific role: ruler over the offerings and tithes. The abundance requires ORGANIZATION. The generosity requires ADMINISTRATION. Someone must ensure that every offering reaches its intended purpose. The worship-system needs managers as much as it needs musicians. The stewardship office is as holy as the singing office.
The 'FAITHFULLY' is the most important word in the verse: it modifies the administration, not the giving. The people gave abundantly (verse 5). The administration handled it faithfully. The abundance without the faithfulness would be chaos — resources wasted, distributions unfair, trust eroded. The faithfulness without the abundance would be easy to manage. The COMBINATION — abundance plus faithfulness — is the ideal.
Shimei as the 'NEXT' (deputy) shows BACKUP leadership: the administration has depth. If Cononiah is unavailable, Shimei handles it. The faithful management isn't dependent on one person. The system has REDUNDANCY. The stewardship structure anticipates the need for continuity.
What sacred resource needs more FAITHFUL administration — and who is the Cononiah responsible for managing your community's generosity?
