- 2 Corinthians

- Verse 7
“Do ye look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 10:7 Mean?
Paul confronts the Corinthians' superficial evaluation: "Do ye look on things after the outward appearance?" They've been judging Paul and the false apostles by externals—charisma, eloquence, physical presence, self-presentation. Paul challenges this method: if someone claims to be Christ's based on outward credentials, Paul has the same claim. The difference isn't who looks better. It's who actually belongs to Christ.
The phrase "if any man trust to himself that he is Christ's" targets the false apostles' self-confidence. They've convinced themselves—and the Corinthians—that their impressive exteriors prove their legitimacy. Paul says: fine, you're Christ's. So am I. The external claim doesn't distinguish us. What distinguishes us is the fruit, the suffering, and the consistency of the ministry behind the claim.
The rebuke "do ye look on things after the outward appearance" is one of Paul's most penetrating questions. It applies far beyond the Corinthian situation: the human default is to evaluate by externals. The person who looks the most put-together, who speaks the most impressively, who has the biggest platform—that's who we follow. Paul says: stop evaluating that way. The surface tells you nothing about the substance.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How much of your evaluation of spiritual leaders is based on outward appearance—polish, charisma, platform size?
- 2.If the surface tells you nothing about substance, what should you be evaluating instead?
- 3.Have you been fooled by impressive exteriors that turned out to be spiritually empty? What did you learn?
- 4.Paul was apparently unimpressive in person. How would you have responded to him versus the polished false apostles?
Devotional
"Do ye look on things after the outward appearance?" Paul catches the Corinthians doing what humans always do: judging by externals. Who looks most impressive. Who speaks most eloquently. Who has the most polished presentation. And Paul says: that's not how you evaluate spiritual legitimacy. The outside tells you nothing reliable about the inside.
The false apostles looked great. They were impressive, charismatic, commanding. They probably had better platform presence than Paul (who was apparently unimpressive in person—10:10). The Corinthians, predictably, were dazzled. And Paul asks the question that exposes their evaluation method: you're looking at the surface, aren't you?
The surface is always deceptive in spiritual evaluation. The most impressive speaker isn't necessarily the most faithful teacher. The most charismatic leader isn't necessarily the most trustworthy shepherd. The person with the biggest platform isn't necessarily the person with the deepest relationship with Christ. Surface tells you production quality. It tells you nothing about spiritual reality.
If you've been evaluating spiritual leaders, teachers, and influences by their outward appearance—by their polish, their charisma, their platform size, their visual presentation—Paul's question is aimed at you. Stop looking at the outside. Start looking deeper. The false apostles looked great and were frauds. Paul looked unimpressive and was the real thing. Appearance is the worst possible metric for spiritual evaluation.
