- Chapter 11
- Verse 12
“But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 11:12 Mean?
Paul explains his strategy: what I'm doing (refusing Corinthian money), I'll keep doing. The purpose: to cut off the opportunity that false apostles are looking for — the chance to claim they operate on the same terms as Paul. If Paul accepted money, the false apostles could say: see, we're the same. By refusing, Paul creates a distinction they can't match.
The phrase "cut off occasion" (ekkoptō aphormēn — to cut away the starting point, to remove the platform) means Paul is strategically eliminating the comparison the false apostles want to make. They want to say: we're like Paul. We serve the same way. We operate on the same basis. Paul's free ministry removes that claim: you charge. I don't. We're not the same.
"That wherein they glory, they may be found even as we" means the false apostles boast about their ministry. Paul is saying: if they want to boast about matching me, they'd have to do it my way — for free. And they won't. Because their ministry is about the money. Remove the money comparison and their boasting collapses.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Where does what you WON'T do (a refusal, a sacrifice) distinguish you from the false?
- 2.Does Paul's strategic thinking (the refusal creates a distinction they can't match) model how to handle competitors in ministry?
- 3.How does the false always seek comparison with the genuine — and how does the genuine maintain the distinction?
- 4.Is there something you're doing 'for free' (at personal cost) that exposes the difference between genuine and fraudulent?
Devotional
I'll keep doing what I'm doing. To cut off the excuse the false apostles are looking for. They want to claim we're the same. We're not.
Paul reveals the strategic calculation behind his free ministry: the false apostles in Corinth want to be compared to Paul. They want to say: we serve the same way he does. We have the same authority. We operate on the same terms. And Paul says: no. I preach for free. You charge. The distinction is the money.
"Cut off occasion" — ekkoptō — to chop away. Paul is axing the platform the false apostles are trying to build: the platform of equivalence. If Paul accepts money, they can say "we're the same." If Paul refuses money, the comparison collapses. The refusal IS the strategy.
"That I will do" — Paul's resolve is firm: the free ministry continues. Not because he enjoys the hardship (it costs him — 11:27). Because the strategic value exceeds the personal cost. The distinction between genuine and false apostleship is maintained by the financial arrangement. And Paul won't sacrifice the distinction for personal comfort.
"That wherein they glory" — the false apostles' boasting point. They glory in their ministry status. They want to be classified at Paul's level. And Paul says: if you want to match me, match my terms. Preach for free. Give up the patron system. Work with your hands. Endure hunger. THEN we'll be comparable. They won't do it. Because the money is the motivation. And Paul's free ministry exposes what they can't match.
The strategy is transparent: Paul tells the Corinthians exactly what he's doing and why. The refusal of money isn't a personality quirk. It's a deliberate distinction-creating choice that separates genuine from false in a way the false can't imitate.
The real thing often distinguishes itself by what it WON'T do. The false imitates what it CAN do. But the thing it can't imitate — the sacrifice, the refusal, the cost the genuine bears willingly — is what exposes the difference.
