My Notes
What Does 2 Samuel 13:3 Mean?
"But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man." The most DANGEROUS character introduction in the Bible: Amnon's 'friend' Jonadab. The word 'friend' (rea') — the same word used for intimate companionship — is given to a man whose counsel will enable RAPE. Jonadab is described as 'very subtil' (chakham me'od — very wise/clever). The narrator uses the word for WISDOM to describe a man who will weaponize intelligence for evil. The cleverness serves destruction.
The phrase "Jonadab was a very subtil man" (veYonadav ish chakham me'od — Jonadab was a very wise/clever man) uses CHAKHAM — the highest word for wisdom, the word used for Solomon's wisdom (1 Kings 3:12). But here it's wisdom INVERTED — intelligence without morality, cleverness without conscience. Jonadab's 'wisdom' devises the scheme for Amnon to isolate Tamar (verse 5 — 'pretend to be sick, ask your father to send Tamar to prepare food'). The wise counsel enables the worst crime. The intelligence serves the appetite.
The FAMILY CONNECTION is important: Jonadab is David's NEPHEW — the son of David's brother Shimeah. The evil counsel comes from INSIDE the royal family. The advisor who enables the rape is a RELATIVE. The destruction is domestic. The poison is in the family tree.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'very subtil friend' provides clever strategies for things you shouldn't pursue?
- 2.What does wisdom WITHOUT conscience (intelligence serving evil) teach about the danger of cleverness detached from morality?
- 3.How does Jonadab designing the OPPORTUNITY (not committing the crime) describe the role of enablers?
- 4.What family member or insider has the access and trust to advise destruction from within?
Devotional
Amnon's 'FRIEND.' The word carries weight — this is supposed to be the person who looks out for you, who speaks truth, who wants your good. Instead, Jonadab will devise the strategy that enables Amnon to rape his half-sister Tamar. The friend becomes the architect of destruction. The companion enables the crime.
Jonadab is 'very SUBTIL' — very WISE. The narrator uses the highest word for intelligence. This isn't a foolish man stumbling into bad advice. This is a BRILLIANT man deploying intelligence in service of evil. The scheme he devises (verse 5 — fake illness, request Tamar's presence, isolate her) is CLEVER. The plan works perfectly. The intelligence is real. The morality is absent. Wisdom without conscience is the most dangerous combination.
The 'friend' who enables your worst impulse isn't always easy to identify: Jonadab doesn't push Amnon to rape. He provides the STRATEGY — the clever, plausible cover story that makes the crime POSSIBLE. He creates the opportunity. He designs the circumstances. The friend who says 'here's how you can get what you want' without asking 'should you want it?' is the most dangerous friend you can have.
The FAMILY dimension: Jonadab is David's nephew. The evil counsel comes from inside the house. The advisor isn't an outsider whispering through a window. He's a COUSIN — someone with access, trust, and family standing. The destruction enters through the family network. The poison travels on the family tree.
What 'very subtil friend' in your life provides clever strategies for things you shouldn't pursue?
