“That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Timothy 1:14 Mean?
"That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us." Paul commands Timothy to KEEP — guard, protect, preserve — the GOOD THING (the gospel, the apostolic deposit, the entrusted teaching) that was COMMITTED to him. And the MECHANISM of the keeping is the HOLY SPIRIT who DWELLS IN us. The keeping isn't by human effort alone. The guarding is SPIRIT-EMPOWERED. The preservation of the truth is accomplished through the Spirit who LIVES INSIDE the guardian.
The phrase "that good thing which was committed unto thee" (tēn kalēn parathēkēn — the beautiful/good deposit) treats the gospel as a DEPOSIT — a valuable entrusted to a GUARDIAN. The parathēkē (deposit, entrustment) was a legal term: something valuable placed in someone's care for safekeeping. Timothy is the GUARDIAN of the deposit. The gospel was ENTRUSTED to him. The keeping is his RESPONSIBILITY — not to change it, not to improve it, not to add to it, but to PRESERVE it exactly as received.
The "by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us" (dia pneumatos hagiou tou enoikountos en hēmin — through the Holy Spirit who dwells/inhabits in us) makes the Spirit the AGENT of the preserving: the keeping is done THROUGH (dia) the Spirit. The Spirit who DWELLS IN (enoikountos — inhabiting, making home in) the believer is the power that enables the guarding. The deposit is divine. The guardian is human. The keeping-power is the Spirit.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What has been entrusted to you — and are you keeping it faithfully?
- 2.What does the gospel being a DEPOSIT (to be preserved, not improved) teach about the guardian's role?
- 3.How does the Spirit DWELLING IN you enable the keeping that human effort can't sustain?
- 4.What enemies of the deposit require Spirit-empowered vigilance in your context?
Devotional
Guard the good deposit — BY the Holy Spirit who lives in you. The gospel was ENTRUSTED to Timothy. The keeping is Timothy's RESPONSIBILITY. The power for the keeping is the Spirit's PRESENCE. The deposit is divine. The guardian is human. The keeping-mechanism is the Spirit dwelling inside.
The 'good thing committed unto thee' treats the gospel as a PRECIOUS DEPOSIT: the parathēkē (deposit) was a legal concept — something valuable placed in a custodian's care. Timothy is the CUSTODIAN. The gospel is the DEPOSIT. The responsibility is to KEEP it — preserve it, protect it, guard it unchanged. The custodian doesn't IMPROVE the deposit. The custodian PRESERVES it. The gospel doesn't need Timothy's additions. It needs Timothy's FAITHFULNESS.
The 'keep' (phylaxon — guard, protect, watch over) is a MILITARY word: the guarding is the watchman's duty. The deposit has ENEMIES — false teachers (verse 15-18), those who departed from the faith, those who would change the message. The keeping requires VIGILANCE. The guarding requires ATTENTION. The preservation requires the watchman's posture: alert, armed, on duty.
The 'by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us' makes the Spirit the KEEPING-POWER: Timothy can't guard the deposit in his own strength. The false teachers are too sophisticated. The cultural pressures are too strong. The enemies of the gospel are too numerous. The Spirit who DWELLS IN Timothy provides the power for the keeping. The indwelling is the enabling. The Spirit's presence is the guardian's capacity.
What has been entrusted to YOU — and are you keeping it by the Spirit who dwells in you?
