Acts 7:22

Acts 7:22
And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

My Notes

What Does Acts 7:22 Mean?

"And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds." Stephen summarizes Moses' Egyptian education: he was LEARNED in ALL the wisdom of Egypt AND mighty in WORDS AND DEEDS. The education was comprehensive (all the wisdom). The competence was dual (words and deeds — intellectual AND practical). Moses wasn't a sheltered seminarian. He was the most educated person in the most advanced civilization in the world — and he was effective in both speech and action.

The phrase "learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians" (epaideuthē Mōusēs pasē sophia Aigyptiōn — Moses was educated/trained in all wisdom of the Egyptians) means COMPLETE Egyptian education: Egypt's 'wisdom' included mathematics, astronomy, architecture, administration, law, medicine, and religious philosophy. Moses received ALL of it — the full curriculum of the ancient world's most sophisticated educational system. The preparation for leading Israel began with mastering Egypt's knowledge.

The "mighty in words and in deeds" (ēn de dynatos en logois kai ergois autou — he was powerful in his words and his works/deeds) means DUAL COMPETENCE: Moses wasn't just a scholar (words) or just a doer (deeds). He was mighty in BOTH. The speech and the action carried equal power. The eloquence and the effectiveness were matched. Moses was as impressive when he spoke as when he acted.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What education or competence do you have that still isn't the preparation God requires?
  • 2.What does Moses needing forty desert-years AFTER the finest education teach about God's preparation process?
  • 3.How does being mighty in BOTH words AND deeds describe the completeness that's still not enough?
  • 4.What did the desert add that Egypt's education couldn't — and what desert is adding it to you?

Devotional

Moses was trained in EVERYTHING Egypt knew. And he was powerful in BOTH words AND deeds. The most comprehensive education the ancient world could provide. Dual competence — equally impressive speaking and doing. Moses was the most prepared human being on the planet. And God still had to break him for forty years in the desert before he was ready.

The 'learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians' is the HIGHEST EDUCATION available: Egypt was the intellectual powerhouse of the ancient world — mathematics, architecture (the pyramids were already thousands of years old), medicine, administration, law. Moses received ALL of it. Not partial training. The FULL curriculum. The prince of Egypt was educated as a prince should be — in everything the most advanced civilization could teach.

The 'mighty in words and in deeds' adds COMPETENCE to KNOWLEDGE: Moses didn't just KNOW things. He was EFFECTIVE — powerful in both speech and action. The education translated into capability. The knowledge produced performance. Moses was the complete package: educated AND effective, knowing AND doing, speaking AND acting.

But Stephen's POINT is that ALL of this wasn't enough: the Egyptian education, the dual competence, the mighty words and deeds — none of it made Moses ready to lead Israel. That required FORTY YEARS in the desert (verse 30), a burning bush (verse 30), and a divine commission (verse 34). The most educated, most competent person in the world still needed God's specific calling to fulfill God's specific purpose. The preparation of Egypt wasn't the preparation for leadership. It was the BACKGROUND for the real preparation.

What impressive education or competence do you have that still isn't the preparation God requires?
