Amos 2:12

Amos 2:12
But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

My Notes

What Does Amos 2:12 Mean?

"But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not." Israel's sin is double: they corrupted the CONSECRATED (giving Nazarites wine, violating their vow) and silenced the CALLED (commanding prophets not to prophesy). Both actions target God's specially designated people: the Nazarites set apart for holiness and the prophets set apart for truth. Israel attacked both the devotion and the declaration.

The phrase "gave the Nazarites wine to drink" (vattashqu et hannezirim yayin — you caused the Nazarites to drink wine) means Israel actively CORRUPTED the consecrated: Nazarites took a vow that included abstaining from wine (Numbers 6:3). Israel didn't just tempt them — they GAVE them wine, they CAUSED them to drink. The corruption of the consecrated was the community's doing, not the individual's weakness. The society pressured the holy into unholy.

The "commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not" (ve'al hanneviim tzivvitem lemor lo tinnave'u — and upon the prophets you commanded, saying, do not prophesy) is the silencing of divine speech: the prophets were commanded — by the community, by the leaders, by the people — to STOP. The prophetic gift that God installed (verse 11 — 'I raised up of your sons for prophets') was shut down by the very people it was designed to serve.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What consecrated people in your community are being pressured into compromise?
  • 2.What prophetic voices are being told 'don't prophesy' — and who's issuing the command?
  • 3.How does the community corrupting its OWN holy people describe the mechanics of cultural compromise?
  • 4.What visible devotion or audible truth can't your community tolerate?

Devotional

You gave the Nazarites wine. You told the prophets to shut up. Two attacks on God's designated people: you corrupted the ones set apart for holiness and silenced the ones set apart for truth. The devotion and the declaration — both targeted by the community they were meant to serve.

The 'gave the Nazarites wine' is the community corrupting its own consecrated members: the Nazarite didn't seek the wine. The COMMUNITY gave it. The society that should have protected the Nazarite's vow actively undermined it. The holy person was holy IN the community — and the community made them unholy. The corruption came from the people who should have been the support system.

The 'commanded the prophets, Prophesy not' is the community silencing its own warning system: God raised prophets FROM the community (verse 11 — 'from your sons'). The prophets were homegrown. They weren't foreign invaders. They were community members called by God to speak. And the community's response was: STOP. Don't prophesy. Be quiet. The warning system that grew from the community was shut down by the community.

The double attack — corrupting the consecrated AND silencing the speakers — reveals a society that can't tolerate either devotion or declaration: the Nazarite's lifestyle was a visible rebuke (someone takes holiness seriously). The prophet's words were an audible rebuke (someone speaks truth publicly). Israel couldn't tolerate either. The visible holiness was corrupted. The audible truth was silenced.

What Nazarites are you corrupting and what prophets are you silencing in your community?
