- Chapter 12
- Verse 9
“And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.”
My Notes
What Does Daniel 12:9 Mean?
Daniel is told to stop seeking further explanation: "Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end." The revelation has limits. The understanding is sealed. The answers Daniel wants are not available until a future time. The prophet who received more apocalyptic detail than any other is told: this is where the revelation stops.
The "closed up and sealed" (sathumim va-chathumim — shut and sealed, concealed and authenticated) means the words are both hidden (closed — you can't access them now) and preserved (sealed — they'll be available when the time comes). The sealing isn't destruction. It's preservation. The truths Daniel can't access now are being kept safe for those who will need them at the time of the end.
The "go thy way" (lekh — walk, go, proceed with your life) is the practical instruction: stop trying to understand everything and go live. The knowledge that's sealed isn't available through more prayer or more fasting. It's sealed until its appointed time. Your job isn't to unseal it. Your job is to walk faithfully until the unsealing occurs.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does 'go thy way' (stop seeking, start living) model faithful response to sealed revelation?
- 2.What does 'closed and sealed till the end' (hidden but preserved, not destroyed) teach about truths stored for future generations?
- 3.Where are you trying to unseal what God has sealed — pursuing answers that aren't available in your time?
- 4.How does faithful living without complete understanding (Daniel's model) free you from the anxiety of unanswered questions?
Devotional
Go your way, Daniel. The words are sealed. Until the end. Stop looking for answers that aren't available yet — and go live the life that's in front of you.
The 'go thy way' is the most practical instruction in the apocalyptic literature: the prophet who has just received the most detailed end-times revelation in the Old Testament is told to stop seeking and start living. The curiosity that drives the question ('how long? what's the outcome?') is legitimate. The answer is: sealed. Not available. Go live.
The 'closed and sealed' means the words are simultaneously hidden and preserved: they're closed (you can't access them from this side of history) and sealed (they're authenticated and protected for future access). The sealing isn't a punishment. It's a storage method. The truths are kept safe for the generation that will need them. Daniel's generation doesn't need them. The end-times generation will.
The 'till the time of the end' provides the unsealing date: when the end arrives, the words will open. What Daniel couldn't understand will become clear to those living in the times the words describe. The sealed prophecies are like a time capsule: buried for preservation, designed to be opened by a future generation whose circumstances will make the contents immediately relevant.
The instruction to 'go thy way' is the pastoral gift: you don't need to understand everything to live faithfully. The sealed portions of God's plan aren't necessary for today's obedience. Daniel walked faithfully through the rest of his life (verse 13: he'll rest and 'stand in thy lot at the end of the days') without unsealing the sealed words. The faithful life doesn't require complete understanding. It requires obedient walking.
What sealed truth are you trying to unseal — and would 'go thy way' be a better instruction?
