My Notes
What Does Deuteronomy 1:10 Mean?
"The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude." Moses reminds Israel of the FULFILLED PROMISE: God told Abraham his descendants would be like the STARS (Genesis 15:5). And NOW — 'this day' — they ARE. The promise made to ONE MAN centuries ago is VISIBLE in the multitude standing before Moses. The stars-promise has become the stars-REALITY. The fulfillment is PRESENT-TENSE and OBSERVABLE: 'behold, ye ARE this day.' Look around you. The promise is standing next to you.
The phrase "the LORD your God hath multiplied you" (YHWH Eloheikhem hirbah etkhem — the LORD your God has multiplied you) makes God the AGENT of the multiplication: the people didn't multiply THEMSELVES through superior strategy or reproductive planning. GOD multiplied. The agency is DIVINE. The growth is GOD'S DOING. The abundance is ATTRIBUTED — not to natural population-dynamics but to divine MULTIPLICATION.
The "as the stars of heaven for multitude" (kekokhvei hashamayim larov — like the stars of the heavens in abundance) echoes the ABRAHAMIC PROMISE (Genesis 15:5 — 'look now toward heaven, and tell the stars... so shall thy seed be'): the comparison Abraham HEARD, Moses now SEES. The stars-comparison that was a PROMISE to Abraham is a REALITY to Moses. The fulfillment-distance between promise and reality is CENTURIES — but the fulfillment is EXACT. The metaphor became the math.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What promise is being fulfilled THIS DAY — and are you seeing it?
- 2.What does God being the MULTIPLIER (not human planning) teach about the source of abundance?
- 3.How does the stars-promise to Abraham becoming the stars-REALITY to Moses describe multi-generational fulfillment?
- 4.What 'behold' — what present-tense fulfillment — surrounds you right now?
Devotional
God has MULTIPLIED you. And behold — you ARE this day as the STARS OF HEAVEN. The promise Abraham HEARD is the reality Moses SEES. The stars-comparison that was a PROMISE to one man centuries ago is now VISIBLE in the multitude standing on the plains of Moab. The fulfillment is present-tense: BEHOLD. Look around. The promise is HERE.
The 'LORD your God hath multiplied' makes God the MULTIPLIER: the growth isn't attributed to demographics, fertility, or human planning. GOD multiplied. The agency is divine. The abundance is God's doing. The nation that stands before Moses — too numerous to count easily — is the PRODUCT of divine multiplication, not human effort.
The 'as the stars of heaven' echoes GENESIS 15:5: the night Abraham looked up and God said 'count the stars — so shall your seed be.' That PROMISE — spoken to a childless old man — is NOW a FACT. The stars Abraham couldn't count are the descendants Moses can't count. The metaphor became the MEASUREMENT. The comparison became the CENSUS-DESCRIPTION. The poetic promise became the demographic reality.
The 'this day' makes the fulfillment PRESENT-TENSE: not 'someday your descendants will be like stars.' THIS DAY — right now, standing here, at this moment. The fulfillment isn't FUTURE anymore. It's CURRENT. The promise has been REALIZED. The 'this day' says: stop hoping for it. START seeing it. The fulfillment is already AROUND you.
What promise made centuries (or years) ago is being fulfilled THIS DAY — and are you seeing it?
