Deuteronomy 18:15

Deuteronomy 18:15
The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;

My Notes

What Does Deuteronomy 18:15 Mean?

Deuteronomy 18:15 is one of the most significant messianic prophecies in the Torah. Moses tells Israel: "The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken." A future prophet — from Israel, like Moses, with divine authority — is promised.

"Like unto me" sets the bar extraordinarily high. Moses spoke with God face to face (Deuteronomy 34:10). He mediated the covenant. He led a nation out of bondage. He performed signs and wonders. To be "like Moses" means to operate at the highest level of prophetic authority — not just predicting events but mediating between God and humanity, establishing a new covenant, leading a new exodus.

The New Testament identifies Jesus as this Prophet (Acts 3:22-23, 7:37). The parallels are deliberate: Moses delivered Israel from Egypt; Jesus delivers humanity from sin. Moses mediated the old covenant at Sinai; Jesus mediates the new covenant through His blood. Moses fed Israel with manna; Jesus is the bread of life. The prophecy finds its fulfillment not in a series of prophets but in a single person who surpasses Moses entirely — the Prophet who is also the Word of God incarnate.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Do you treat Jesus as one spiritual voice among many, or as the definitive Prophet — the one you 'shall hearken' to above all others?
  • 2.Moses pointed beyond himself to someone greater. Who in your life has modeled that kind of leadership — directing you toward Jesus rather than toward themselves?
  • 3.What does it mean practically to 'hearken' to Jesus — not just hear Him but obey? Where are you hearing without hearkening?
  • 4.The prophet like Moses mediates a new covenant. How does your daily life reflect that you're living under a new covenant rather than trying to earn your way under the old one?

Devotional

Moses knew he wasn't the last word. Even at the height of his authority — the man who spoke with God face to face, who parted the Red Sea, who carried the law down from Sinai — he pointed forward. Someone is coming after me. Someone like me, but more.

That's the posture of every faithful leader: pointing beyond yourself. Moses didn't build a monument to his own legacy. He told Israel to watch for the next one. And when Jesus arrived — feeding thousands, teaching with unmatched authority, mediating a new covenant — the prophecy locked into place.

"Unto him ye shall hearken" — this isn't optional. The prophet like Moses carries divine authority, and the response required is obedience. Not evaluation. Not debate. Not selective hearing. Hearkening. The same way Israel was supposed to listen to Moses, you're called to listen to Jesus. And Jesus is a prophet who doesn't just speak God's words — He is God's Word.

If you've been treating Jesus as one voice among many — one spiritual teacher alongside others, one perspective to consider — this verse corrects that. He's not a voice. He's the voice. The prophet Moses said was coming. The one you shall hearken to, above every other claim on your attention.
