“Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.”
My Notes
What Does Ecclesiastes 7:19 Mean?
"Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city." The Preacher quantifies wisdom's power: it provides more protection than a squad of elite soldiers. Ten mighty men in a city — the ancient equivalent of a security team — can defend against physical threats. Wisdom defends against every kind of threat: social, financial, relational, strategic, spiritual. The bodyguards protect your body. Wisdom protects your life.
The comparison isn't between wisdom and strength in the abstract. It's between wisdom and concentrated military power — the best defensive resource a city has. And wisdom is better. Not because the mighty men are weak. Because wisdom operates on a broader front.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What are you relying on for protection that's the equivalent of mighty men when you need wisdom?
- 2.What threat in your life is invisible to 'muscle' but visible to wisdom?
- 3.Why does wisdom provide broader protection than concentrated strength?
- 4.Where do you need to invest in wisdom rather than adding more 'mighty men' to your defense?
Devotional
Wisdom is stronger than ten mighty men. Not ten ordinary soldiers. Ten mighty men — gibborim, the elite warriors, the special forces of the ancient world. The best military protection a city could offer. And wisdom provides more security than all ten combined.
The comparison is deliberately lopsided. Ten mighty men is massive defensive capability. In a city under siege, ten elite warriors could hold a gate, repel attackers, protect the leadership. They're the most tangible form of security available. And the Preacher says: one wise person is worth more.
Because the mighty men can only defend against visible, physical threats. Wisdom defends against everything. The bad business deal the mighty men can't recognize. The toxic relationship the bodyguards can't identify. The strategic error that no amount of military strength can fix. The decision that seems safe but leads to ruin. Wisdom sees what the mighty men can't — because wisdom operates on a level that muscle doesn't reach.
This is why nations with the biggest armies still fall. Military strength without wisdom is a lot of power with no navigation. The ten mighty men at the gate don't help if the king inside is making foolish decisions. The strongest defense is useless if wisdom didn't design the strategy that deployed it.
If you had to choose — ten mighty men or one wise counselor — choose wisdom. The mighty men protect from the threat you can see. Wisdom protects from the threats you can't. And the threats you can't see are the ones that actually destroy cities.
