“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.”
My Notes
What Does Ephesians 4:7 Mean?
"But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ." Grace is given to EVERY believer — but in DIFFERENT MEASURES. The grace isn't uniform. It's MEASURED — portioned, calibrated, distributed according to the GIFT OF CHRIST. Christ determines the measure. Christ determines the gift. Each person receives grace — but the AMOUNT and TYPE are individually assigned by Christ Himself.
The phrase "unto every one of us is given grace" (heni de hekastō hēmōn edothē hē charis — to each one of us was given the grace) makes the distribution UNIVERSAL AND INDIVIDUAL: EVERY ONE receives grace. Nobody is skipped. Nobody is excluded. But the 'each one' (hekastō) means the grace is INDIVIDUALLY given — personally measured, specifically assigned, uniquely proportioned. The universality is in the giving. The individuality is in the measuring.
The "according to the measure of the gift of Christ" (kata to metron tēs dōreas tou Christou — according to the measure/standard of the gift of Christ) makes CHRIST the measurer: the grace-amount is determined by Christ's GIFT — His sovereign decision about how much and what kind of grace each person receives. The measure isn't random. It's CHRISTOLOGICAL — assigned by Christ, for Christ's purposes, according to Christ's assessment of what each person needs for their role in the body.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What measure of grace has Christ given you — and are you using it or comparing it?
- 2.What does every person receiving grace (but in different measures) teach about universal gifts with individual proportions?
- 3.How does Christ being the MEASURER change your relationship to the amount you received?
- 4.What calling does your specific measure of grace equip you for?
Devotional
Every one of us receives grace — but MEASURED differently. Christ determines the measure. Christ assigns the gift. The grace is universal (everyone gets it) AND individual (everyone gets a different amount). The distribution is as personal as the Distributor.
The 'every one of us is given grace' eliminates the graceless: NOBODY in the body of Christ is without grace. Every believer has received a gift. Every member has been graced. The distribution is COMPLETE — no one was overlooked, no one was skipped, no one received nothing. The grace is as universal as the membership. If you're in the body, you received grace.
The 'according to the measure' makes the grace PROPORTIONED: the grace isn't identical for everyone. It's MEASURED — calibrated, portioned, sized to fit the recipient and the role. One person receives a larger measure for one kind of service. Another receives a different measure for a different service. The measuring means the grace is CUSTOMIZED. The gift matches the calling. The measure matches the mission.
The 'of the gift of Christ' makes CHRIST the sovereign distributor: Christ decides the measure. Christ determines the gift. The distribution isn't democratic (equal portions to all). It's CHRISTOCRATIC (Christ assigns what He wills to whom He wills). The sovereignty of the distribution means you don't compare your measure to someone else's. Your measure was assigned by Christ for YOUR calling.
What measure of grace has Christ given YOU — and are you deploying it or comparing it?
