My Notes
What Does Exodus 29:10 Mean?
"And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock." The ordination ceremony begins with a BULL brought before the Tabernacle — and Aaron and his sons lay their HANDS on its HEAD. The hand-laying is the act of IDENTIFICATION: the priests identify WITH the animal, transferring their GUILT to the sacrifice. The hands on the head say: this animal represents ME. My sin is transferred to THIS substitute. The death that follows is MINE — borne by the animal.
The phrase "shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock" (vesamakh Aharon uvanav et yedehem al rosh happar — Aaron and his sons shall lean/press their hands upon the head of the bull) describes PHYSICAL IDENTIFICATION through TOUCH: the laying-on of hands (semikah) is the act of PRESSING — leaning body-weight on the animal's head. The pressure isn't gentle touch. It's LEANING — pressing down, transferring weight, physically connecting the person to the animal. The leaning is the transferring. The pressing is the identifying.
The LOCATION — "before the tabernacle of the congregation" (liphnei ohel mo'ed — before the tent of meeting) — places the sacrifice AT THE ENTRANCE to God's dwelling: the bull isn't killed in a field. It's brought to the DOOR of the Tabernacle — the threshold between human space and divine space. The sacrifice happens at the BOUNDARY. The death occurs at the DOOR. The substitution takes place where human territory and divine territory MEET.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What personal identification with sacrifice has your ministry required before you could serve?
- 2.What does LEANING (pressing weight, not gentle touching) teach about the physical reality of identification?
- 3.How does the sacrifice happening at the DOOR (threshold between human and divine) describe the price of access?
- 4.What does the PRIESTS needing sacrifice FIRST teach about ministers being served by the altar before serving at it?
Devotional
Bring a bull. Before the Tabernacle door. Aaron and his sons lay their HANDS on its head. The pressing of hands on the head is the TRANSFER: the priests' guilt moves to the animal. The animal becomes the SUBSTITUTE. The death that follows is the priests' death — borne by the bull. The identification is physical, personal, and weight-bearing.
The 'put their hands upon the head' is SEMIKAH — the laying-on that transfers: the Hebrew word means to LEAN, to PRESS, to place weight on. The hand-laying isn't a gentle touch. It's a LEANING — pressing body-weight onto the animal's head, physically connecting yourself to the substitute. The pressing says: I am CONNECTED to this animal. What happens to THIS animal happens FOR me. The death is MINE, transferred.
The 'before the tabernacle of the congregation' places the sacrifice at the THRESHOLD: the tent of meeting is WHERE God dwells. The sacrifice happens at the ENTRANCE — the boundary between the human camp and the divine presence. The substitution takes place at the DOOR — the transitional space between ordinary ground and sacred ground. The sacrifice is the PRICE OF ADMISSION. The death at the door opens the way inside.
The ORDINATION sacrifice is specifically for the PRIESTS: the hand-laying isn't performed by the general congregation (that happens elsewhere). HERE — the priests themselves must identify with the sacrifice. The MINISTERS must press their hands on the head. The SERVANTS of the altar must first be SERVED BY the altar. The priests who will facilitate others' sacrifices must first experience their OWN. The ministry begins with the minister's sacrifice.
What 'hands on the head' — what personal identification with the sacrifice — has your ministry required before you could serve?
