What Does Exodus 29:37 Mean?

"Whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy." The altar's holiness is contagious: anything that contacts it becomes holy. The transfer is automatic — the holiness doesn't require a priestly blessing. The touch itself produces the consecration. The altar makes things holy by contact.

This principle of communicable holiness is the opposite of the normal rule in Levitical law: usually, uncleanness is contagious (touching the unclean makes you unclean). Here, holiness is contagious. The altar has been so thoroughly sanctified (seven days of atonement — verse 37) that its holiness overwhelms the impurity of whatever touches it.

Jesus operates on this same principle: when He touches lepers, the leper doesn't contaminate Jesus. Jesus' holiness heals the leper. The holiness is stronger than the uncleanness. The transfer goes in the direction of purity, not in the direction of contamination.

Devotional

Touch the altar and you become holy. The holiness is contagious. The sanctification transfers by contact. In a world where uncleanness normally contaminates everything it touches, the altar reverses the flow: its holiness overwhelms what touches it.

This verse describes the most radical form of consecration: automatic, contact-based, and comprehensive. You don't need a ceremony. You don't need a priest to pronounce you holy. You touch the altar and the altar's holiness becomes yours. The transfer is immediate, unmediated, and irresistible.

The normal Levitical direction is the opposite: touch something unclean and YOU become unclean. Contamination usually wins. Impurity usually spreads. The default direction of transfer is from dirty to clean. But the altar — after seven days of intensive atonement — has been made so holy that the direction reverses. Holiness wins. Purity spreads. The clean overwhelms the unclean.

Jesus operates by the same principle: He touches lepers and the lepers are healed. He doesn't catch leprosy. The holiness flows from Him to the unclean, not from the unclean to Him. The altar principle is the Christ principle: divine holiness is more contagious than human impurity.

This is the gospel's physics: grace is stronger than sin. Holiness is more contagious than contamination. The altar overwhelms what touches it. Christ overwhelms what touches Him. And what touches Christ is you.

You've touched the altar. The holiness has transferred. You are holy — not because of your condition but because of your contact.
