“On the first day of the first month shalt thou set up the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.”
My Notes
What Does Exodus 40:2 Mean?
God gives Moses the specific date for the tabernacle's erection: "the first day of the first month"—New Year's Day on Israel's calendar. The tabernacle's inauguration coincides with the beginning of a new era. The date isn't random. It's the fresh start of the sacred calendar, connecting the tabernacle to the concept of new beginning. God's dwelling among His people marks the start of something unprecedented.
The tabernacle had been under construction since the instructions were given on Sinai. Now the pieces are complete—the boards, the curtains, the furnishings, the priestly garments—and the date for assembly is set. The preparation phase is over. The inauguration day has arrived. Everything that was designed in chapters 25-31 and built in chapters 35-39 will be assembled on the first day of the first month.
The instruction to "set up" (taqim, to cause to stand, to establish) implies that the tabernacle's components were ready but unassembled. The parts existed separately. The setting up brought them together into a functioning whole. The individual components—however beautifully crafted—weren't the tabernacle until they were assembled. The setting up was the moment the parts became the presence.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Have the 'components' of your calling been prepared but not yet assembled? What might the inauguration day look like?
- 2.God chose New Year's Day for the tabernacle. What does the connection between new beginnings and God's dwelling say about fresh starts?
- 3.The parts existed separately. The setting up made them whole. What needs to be assembled in your life for God's purpose to be fulfilled?
- 4.Is your 'tabernacle' ready to be set up—or are you still in the crafting phase?
Devotional
First day. First month. New Year's Day. God chose the beginning of the calendar to set up His dwelling place. The tabernacle isn't just a building. It's a new era. The date marks the transition from a people wandering without God's structured presence to a people living around it. Everything is about to change. Starting today.
The components were already crafted—months of skilled work by willing hearts. Boards and curtains and golden furnishings, all complete, all waiting. What they lacked wasn't materials or craftsmanship. It was assembly. The parts needed to become a whole. The setting up was the moment the individual pieces became the dwelling place of God.
There's a principle here about preparation and inauguration: you can have every piece ready and still need the setting-up day. The boards don't become the tabernacle until someone stands them up. The curtains don't become the covering until someone hangs them. The individual components of your calling—the skills you've developed, the character that's been formed, the resources that have been gathered—aren't the completed work until the day of assembly arrives. The preparation is essential. But so is the specific day when everything comes together.
If you've been in a long preparation phase—if the components are ready but the assembly hasn't happened—watch for your first-day-of-the-first-month moment. God has a specific date for the setting up. The preparation isn't wasted. The components aren't purposeless. But they need an inauguration day—the day when the parts become the whole, and God's presence fills what's been built.
