Ezekiel 11:17

Ezekiel 11:17
Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.

My Notes

What Does Ezekiel 11:17 Mean?

"Therefore say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will even gather you from the people, and assemble you out of the countries where ye have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel." After the visions of departure and judgment, God speaks restoration: I will GATHER (collect the scattered), ASSEMBLE (bring together from multiple countries), and GIVE (restore the land of Israel). The three verbs reverse the three dimensions of exile: the scattering is reversed by gathering, the dispersal is reversed by assembling, and the landlessness is reversed by giving.

The phrase "gather you from the people" (veqibbatzti etkhem min ha'ammim — I will collect you from the peoples) means God will extract Israel from among the nations where they were scattered: the gathering is a RETRIEVAL — God going into the nations and pulling His people out. The scattered aren't left to find their way home. God goes and GETS them.

The "I will give you the land of Israel" (venatatti lakhem et admat Yisra'el — I will give to you the soil/ground of Israel) restores the specific land: not a new land, not a different territory, but the land of ISRAEL — the specific, covenantal, promised land. The same ground. The same inheritance. The land they lost is the land they receive back.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What has been scattered in your life that God might be gathering back together?
  • 2.What does God going to GET His people (not waiting for them to return) teach about divine initiative?
  • 3.How does the restored land being the SAME land (not a different one) speak to your specific losses?
  • 4.What 'countries' have your scattered pieces ended up in — and do you believe God can assemble them?

Devotional

I will gather you. I will assemble you. I will give you the land. After the scattering — after the exile, the dispersal, the loss of everything — God promises to REVERSE it all. The gathering undoes the scattering. The assembling undoes the dispersal. The giving undoes the loss. Every dimension of the exile has a corresponding restoration.

The 'gather you from the people' means God does the COLLECTING: the scattered don't have to find their own way home. God goes into the nations where they were dispersed and PULLS THEM OUT. The gathering is divine action, not human initiative. God goes to where His people are — however far, however scattered, however embedded in foreign lands — and retrieves them.

The 'assemble you out of the countries' adds the scope: not from one country but from COUNTRIES — plural, multiple, geographically diverse. The exile spread Israel across the ancient world. The regathering collects them from every location. The assembly is as comprehensive as the dispersal. Every country that received scattered Israelites will release them for the reassembly.

The 'give you the land of Israel' is the specific restoration: not any land. THE land. Israel. The same territory. The same inheritance. The covenantal land that was lost through sin is restored through grace. The giving is a RETURN to what was always theirs. The land doesn't change. The ownership does — it comes back.

What has God scattered that He's now promising to gather — and do you believe the same land will be restored?
