- Verse 5
“Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword.”
My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 30:5 Mean?
"Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword." Egypt's allies are listed and sentenced: Ethiopia (Cush — southern Egypt/Sudan), Libya (Put — North Africa), Lydia (Lud — Asia Minor), the mingled people (mixed populations), Chub (an unidentified ally), and the treaty-partners. EVERYONE connected to Egypt falls alongside Egypt. The alliances that were supposed to protect all collapse together.
The phrase "all the mingled people" (vekhol ha'erev — all the mixed multitude) describes the diverse populations attached to Egypt: the foreign workers, the mercenaries, the refugees, the mixed communities that formed around Egypt's economy. The 'mingled' means they're entangled with Egypt — their fate is tied to Egypt's fate. The mixture that seemed like strength becomes shared vulnerability.
The "men of the land that is in league" (uvenei eretz habberit — sons of the land of the covenant/treaty) are the nations with formal alliances: the treaty-partners who signed mutual defense agreements with Egypt. The treaties promised protection. The treaties deliver shared destruction. The alliance that said 'we'll protect you' now says 'we'll fall with you.'
Reflection Questions
- 1.What alliances are you entangled with — and if they fall, do you fall too?
- 2.What does every ally falling alongside Egypt teach about the vulnerability of dependent relationships?
- 3.How does the 'mingled people' (attached for safety) being destroyed by their attachment warn about false security?
- 4.What treaty or alliance in your life promises protection but might deliver shared destruction?
Devotional
Ethiopia falls. Libya falls. Lydia falls. The mixed peoples fall. The treaty-partners fall. EVERYONE connected to Egypt falls when Egypt falls. The alliances that promised protection deliver shared destruction. The treaties that guaranteed safety guarantee shared doom.
The list of nations is the list of dependencies: each nation or group is connected to Egypt — by geography (Ethiopia, Libya), by trade (Lydia), by mixed population (the mingled), by treaty (the covenant-land). Each connection was supposed to provide mutual support. Instead, each connection becomes a shared sentence. The fall is COMMUNAL. The connected fall together.
The 'mingled people' are the most vulnerable: they're the mixed populations — people who attached themselves to Egypt's power for survival. The foreign workers. The refugees who found shelter in Egypt's shadow. The mercenaries who served in Egypt's army. Their mingling with Egypt was supposed to be their safety. It becomes their sentence. The entanglement that seemed wise proves lethal.
The 'men of the land that is in league' are the treaty-holders whose contracts fail: the formal alliances — the signed agreements, the mutual defense pacts, the covenant-partnerships — all collapse. The treaties promised 'if you're attacked, we'll defend you.' The reality is: if you fall, we fall WITH you. The alliance that was supposed to prevent the fall instead SHARES the fall.
What alliances — what connections, dependencies, treaties — are you entangled with? And if they fall, do you fall with them?
