My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 32:21 Mean?
Ezekiel describes Sheol—the realm of the dead—as a place where fallen empires are gathered. "The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell." The previously powerful nations who have already been judged welcome the newly fallen empire to their ranks. The mighty of the past address the mighty of the present from the grave.
The phrase "they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword" reduces every empire to the same condition: horizontal, unidentified, killed violently. The distinctions that mattered on the surface—power, wealth, military might, cultural achievement—have been erased in Sheol. Every nation lies in the same posture. Every empire occupies the same ground. Death is the great equalizer of civilizations.
The vision of fallen empires speaking from Sheol creates a kind of underworld parliament: Assyria, Egypt, Elam, and others already there, commenting on each new arrival. The message is grim but clear: you're not special. Every empire that thought it was eternal ended up here. Welcome to the club.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'mighty' thing are you treating as permanent that will eventually join every other empire in the grave?
- 2.If every earthly power ends the same way, where should your ultimate allegiance be placed?
- 3.Does the image of fallen empires speaking from the grave change how you view the powers and institutions of your own time?
- 4.If Sheol is the equalizer of civilizations, what's the only thing that actually endures? How does that shape your priorities?
Devotional
The mighty dead speak from the grave to the newly fallen: welcome to Sheol. You're not special. We all ended up here—Assyria, Egypt, Elam. Every empire that stood tall lies flat now. Every nation that thought it was eternal is horizontal, slain, unnamed.
This vision of the underworld is Ezekiel's way of demolishing civilizational pride. The empires that seemed invincible—the ones that redrew maps, rebuilt worlds, and thought they'd last forever—are all in the same grave. Speaking to each other. Comparing notes on how the mighty fall. And there's always room for one more.
The equalizing power of death applies not just to individuals but to institutions. Your company, your movement, your denomination, your country—whatever you've been treating as permanent—it has a slot reserved in Sheol alongside every other mighty thing that has already fallen. The strong among the mighty will speak to it from the grave: we were mighty too. Look where we are now.
This isn't nihilism—it's perspective. If every earthly power ends in the same grave, then investing your ultimate allegiance in any earthly power is investing in a future resident of Sheol. The only kingdom that doesn't end up horizontal is God's. The only power that doesn't have a reserved slot in the underworld is His. Build your life on the one kingdom that has no slot in Sheol—because everything else is just waiting for its turn to lie down.
