My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 35:1 Mean?
"Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying." The standard prophetic reception formula introduces a new oracle — this one against Mount Seir (Edom). The simple sentence records a divine communication event: God's word CAME to Ezekiel. The word traveled. The word arrived. The prophet received. The formula that appears over 50 times in Ezekiel documents each instance of divine speech as a specific event, not a general state.
The phrase "the word of the LORD came unto me" (vayehi devar YHWH elai — the word of the LORD happened/came to me) treats each oracle as an EVENT: the word didn't reside in Ezekiel permanently. It CAME — arrived at a specific moment, for a specific message, with a specific destination. Each 'coming' is a fresh delivery. Each oracle is a new arrival of divine speech.
The word "saying" (lemor — to say, saying) indicates that the word came with a COMMAND to speak it: the word doesn't just inform Ezekiel. It instructs him to COMMUNICATE. The 'saying' means 'say this.' The receiving is never just for the prophet. It's always for delivery. The word comes TO Ezekiel but is always FOR someone else.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Do you recognize when God's word arrives — as a specific event, not a general feeling?
- 2.What does the word COMING (traveling, arriving) teach about divine communication being event-based?
- 3.How does 'saying' (say this) transform reception into assignment?
- 4.What word has come to you that was meant for delivery — and have you spoken it?
Devotional
The word of the LORD came to me, saying. The simplest sentence in Ezekiel — and one of the most repeated. Each occurrence marks a moment: God's word arrived. The prophet received. A new message was delivered for communication. The formula documents divine speech as EVENT, not atmosphere.
The 'came unto me' means the word TRAVELED: it moved from God to Ezekiel. It didn't reside in Ezekiel naturally. It ARRIVED — from outside, from above, from the divine source to the human receiver. Each arrival is fresh. Each delivery is specific. The prophet isn't a permanently inspired person. He's a repeatedly visited one. The word comes and comes and comes — each time a new event.
The 'saying' — lemor — means the word came WITH INSTRUCTIONS: say this. Communicate this. Deliver this message. The word doesn't arrive for Ezekiel's private edification. It arrives for PUBLIC declaration. The 'saying' turns reception into assignment. The hearing becomes the speaking. The receiving becomes the delivering.
The repetition of this formula throughout Ezekiel (over 50 times) creates a rhythm: word comes, prophet receives, message is delivered. Word comes again, prophet receives again, message is delivered again. The prophetic ministry is a series of these events — discrete, specific, and always aimed at communication. The prophet is the conduit, not the reservoir.
Do you recognize when God's word 'comes to you' — and do you understand that the 'saying' means it's for delivery, not just reception?
