- Verse 24
“And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.”
My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 37:24 Mean?
God promises through Ezekiel that David — the messianic king from David's line — will be king over the reunited people. One shepherd over all. No more division between Israel and Judah. One people, one shepherd, one king.
The language echoes Ezekiel 34:23 — one shepherd who feeds them. The Messiah is consistently described as a shepherd-king: authority expressed through care, not domination.
"They shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them" — the people under this shepherd will obey. Not through external enforcement but through internal transformation (connected to the new heart promised in 36:26).
The vision is of complete restoration: political unity (one nation), spiritual renewal (walking in God's statutes), and divine leadership (David their king). Everything that was broken is restored under one shepherd.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does 'one shepherd' mean for the unity God intends for his people?
- 2.How does the shepherd-king model differ from how the world defines leadership?
- 3.How is Jesus the fulfillment of 'David my servant' as the promised shepherd?
- 4.Where is your loyalty divided when God is calling you to follow one shepherd?
Devotional
David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd. One. No more division. No more competing kingdoms. No more fractured loyalty. One shepherd. One king. Over all.
The shepherd is not a committee. Not a system. Not a constitution. A person — David's descendant, the Messiah. The unity comes through a person, not an institution.
They shall also walk in my judgments. The obedience flows from the relationship with the shepherd. The one who feeds them also leads them — into obedience that is not forced but natural. The new heart (36:26) makes the walking possible.
The vision is breathtaking: a reunited people, a perfect shepherd, genuine obedience, lasting peace. Everything that went wrong — the division, the rebellion, the failed kings — undone by one shepherd.
Jesus identified himself as the good shepherd (John 10:11). The one Ezekiel promised has arrived. The shepherd who unites, feeds, and leads — he is here. The vision is being fulfilled.
Are you following the one shepherd? Or are you still divided — pulled between competing voices, fractured in your loyalty, looking for leadership in places other than the shepherd God appointed?
