My Notes
What Does Ezekiel 39:21 Mean?
"I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them." God's purpose in judging Gog is revelatory: the nations will see God's glory. The judgment isn't private — it's displayed for the entire world. God's glory is set among the nations like a standard planted in conquered territory.
The phrase "my judgment that I have executed" treats the judgment as a completed work displayed for viewing. Like a finished painting hung in a gallery, the judgment is executed and then shown. The nations are invited to examine what God has done.
The combination of glory, judgment, and hand creates a comprehensive revelation: God's glory (His character), His judgment (His justice), and His hand (His power). The nations see all three simultaneously. The defeat of Gog becomes a theology lesson for the world.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does God use dramatic events to reveal Himself to people who don't know Him?
- 2.What has God done in your lifetime that displayed His character to a watching world?
- 3.How does judgment-as-exhibition change your understanding of why God acts publicly?
- 4.What glory of God is currently on display that you might be missing?
Devotional
God displays His glory among the nations by showing them what He did to Gog. The judgment becomes an exhibition. The nations are the audience. And what they see is God's character, God's justice, and God's power — all demonstrated through the destruction of the invader.
This reframes the purpose of judgment entirely. God doesn't judge in private. He judges publicly, displays the results, and invites the world to draw conclusions. The defeat of Gog isn't just a military event — it's a revelation. The nations who watch learn something about who God is that they couldn't learn any other way.
Glory among the heathen — among the nations who don't know God — means God's reputation reaches people who've never heard of Him through the spectacle of His justice. They see what He did. They see the hand that did it. And they know: this is what the God of Israel is actually like. Not the weak, ineffective deity the exile suggested. The God whose hand lays empires flat.
God's greatest moments of self-revelation often come through His most dramatic acts of judgment. The Exodus. The flood. The destruction of Gog. Each one is designed to set God's glory in plain view of people who would otherwise never encounter it.
What is God revealing about Himself through the events of your time? And are you watching — really watching — to see His glory set among the nations?
