- Verse 5
“And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.”
My Notes
What Does Genesis 39:5 Mean?
"And it came to pass from the time that he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field." The LORD blesses Potiphar's house — a pagan Egyptian's household — because of Joseph. The blessing is comprehensive: everything in the house and in the field prospers. The source is identified: the LORD. The reason is specified: for Joseph's sake. The scope is total: all that he had. The pagan household prospers because the faithful servant of God is in it.
The Abrahamic promise is operating: "I will bless them that bless thee" (12:3). Potiphar blessed Joseph (gave him authority). God blessed Potiphar (prospered his household). The blessing flows through Joseph to everyone in Joseph's sphere of influence — regardless of their faith or nationality.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What household, workplace, or community is being blessed 'for your sake' — because you're faithfully present in it?
- 2.How does the Abrahamic overflow (blessing flowing through you to people who don't share your faith) operate in your context?
- 3.What does Potiphar's household prospering teach about the scope of blessing attached to a faithful person?
- 4.Where is God blessing 'the Egyptian' in your life — prospering someone else because of your presence?
Devotional
God blessed the Egyptian's house. For Joseph's sake. The pagan household prospered because the man of God was in it. The blessing wasn't for Joseph alone. It overflowed to everyone Joseph was connected to.
The LORD blessed the Egyptian's house. Not Joseph's house. The Egyptian's house. Potiphar worships Egyptian gods. His household follows Egyptian religion. His servants serve an Egyptian master. And the LORD — Israel's God, the God Potiphar doesn't worship — blesses the whole operation. Because Joseph is in it.
For Joseph's sake. The reason is personal: Joseph. The blessing doesn't flow because Potiphar deserved it. Because Potiphar converted. Because Potiphar acknowledged the LORD. The blessing flows because Joseph — the faithful servant of the LORD — is present. Joseph's presence in the household activates the Abrahamic blessing for everyone in the household.
Upon all that he had in the house, and in the field. Comprehensive. The blessing covers both domains: indoor (the house — domestic management) and outdoor (the field — agricultural production). Nothing in Potiphar's economic life is outside the scope of the blessing that Joseph's presence produces. The prosperity is total because the servant of God is trusted with total authority.
The Abrahamic principle (12:3): in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. Joseph IS the fulfillment of this promise in miniature: through one descendant of Abraham, an entire Egyptian household receives blessing. The nations blessed through Abraham are blessed through Abraham's grandson's grandson — one family at a time, one household at a time, one faithful servant at a time.
Your presence in a workplace, a neighborhood, a community carries the same potential. The LORD blessed the Egyptian for Joseph's sake — meaning the people who benefit from your presence don't need to share your faith for the blessing to flow. The overflow of God's favor through a faithful person touches everyone in their sphere. The blessing isn't contained by covenant boundaries. It spills over them.
Potiphar doesn't know why his household prospers. He just knows it prospered after Joseph became overseer. The connection between the servant's faithfulness and the household's blessing is visible to the narrator and invisible to the beneficiary. And that's exactly how the Abrahamic blessing works: the world prospers through Abraham's children without knowing who's generating the prosperity.
