Genesis 41:43

Genesis 41:43
And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

My Notes

What Does Genesis 41:43 Mean?

"And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt." Joseph's elevation is SPECTACULAR: the SECOND CHARIOT (the vice-regal vehicle — only Pharaoh's chariot outranks it), the cry of 'BOW THE KNEE' (avrekh — a command requiring everyone to kneel as Joseph passes), and RULER OVER ALL EGYPT (authority over the entire nation). The prisoner who interpreted a dream in the morning is riding in the royal chariot by afternoon. The elevation is as sudden as it is total.

The phrase "ride in the second chariot" (vayyarkev oto bemirkevet hammishneh — he made him ride in the chariot of the second/vice) makes Joseph the NUMBER TWO: the second chariot is the VICE-REGENT'S vehicle. Only Pharaoh himself outranks the person in the second chariot. Joseph goes from PRISONER to SECOND-IN-COMMAND in one day. The chariot is the MOBILE THRONE — the visible, public, processional demonstration of authority that the entire population sees.

The "they cried before him, Bow the knee" (vayyiqre'u lefanav avrekh — they called before him 'avrekh!') is the PUBLIC PROCLAMATION of authority: as Joseph rides through, heralds cry AVREKH — possibly 'bow the knee' or 'father-tender/young-father' — commanding the population to KNEEL as Joseph passes. The cry is the VERBAL installation. The kneeling is the PUBLIC recognition. Every Egyptian who hears the cry and bends the knee is acknowledging the Hebrew prisoner's new authority.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What long preparation might produce a sudden elevation — and are you still preparing?
  • 2.What does the second chariot (visible rank) teach about divine promotion being public?
  • 3.How does 'bow the knee' being commanded describe the establishment of new authority?
  • 4.What does prison-to-palace in one day teach about the speed of divine reversal?

Devotional

The second chariot. 'Bow the knee!' Ruler over ALL Egypt. Joseph rides through the streets in the vice-regal vehicle while heralds command the population to KNEEL. The prisoner who woke up in a dungeon this morning rules a nation by sunset. The elevation is total, public, and instantaneous.

The 'second chariot' is the VISIBLE RANK: only Pharaoh rides ahead of Joseph. Everyone else is BEHIND. The chariot is the mobile demonstration of authority — the population SEES the rank as Joseph rides through. The visual is the authority. The chariot is the throne on wheels. The number two position is displayed for every eye in Egypt.

The 'bow the knee' is the AUDIBLE RANK: as the chariot moves, heralds CRY — commanding everyone to kneel. The sound precedes the sight. The people hear 'avrekh!' and drop to their knees BEFORE the chariot passes. The authority is both SEEN (the chariot) and HEARD (the herald). The complete sensory experience of Joseph's authority — visual and auditory — is designed to establish the NEW REALITY: the Hebrew prisoner is now the Egyptian ruler.

The 'ruler over all the land of Egypt' is the ADMINISTRATIVE RANK: beyond the visual (chariot) and the auditory (herald), Joseph receives ACTUAL AUTHORITY — governance over the entire land. The ruling isn't ceremonial. It's FUNCTIONAL — Joseph will manage the grain storage (verse 48-49), the distribution (verse 56), and the economic survival of the nation. The chariot and the herald announce what the ADMINISTRATION will execute.

The SPEED of the elevation is the story's miracle: prison to palace in ONE DAY. The years of suffering (sold at 17, imprisoned for years, now 30 — verse 46) were the PREPARATION. The elevation was the MOMENT. Thirteen years of preparation. One day of promotion.

What thirteen-year preparation might produce a one-day elevation — and are you still in the preparation phase?
