Hebrews 12:24

Hebrews 12:24
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

My Notes

What Does Hebrews 12:24 Mean?

The writer of Hebrews describes what believers have come to in the new covenant, culminating in: Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

Jesus the mediator (mesites) of the new covenant — a mediator stands between two parties. Jesus stands between God and humanity, negotiating and guaranteeing the terms of the new covenant. The old covenant had Moses as mediator (Galatians 3:19). The new covenant has Jesus — whose mediation is superior because his sacrifice is superior.

The blood of sprinkling — the reference is to the sprinkled blood that ratifies and applies the covenant. Exodus 24:8 describes Moses sprinkling blood to ratify the old covenant. Hebrews reframes this: Christ's blood is the sprinkled blood of the new covenant — applied to believers, ratifying the permanent relationship between God and his people.

That speaketh better things than that of Abel — Abel's blood spoke (Genesis 4:10) — it cried from the ground for vengeance, for justice against Cain. Christ's blood also speaks — but it speaks better things. Where Abel's blood cried for judgment, Christ's blood cries for mercy. Where Abel's blood demanded punishment, Christ's blood secures forgiveness.

The comparison is powerful: both bloods speak. Abel's says avenge. Christ's says forgive. The ground that received Abel's blood demanded justice. The mercy seat that received Christ's blood provides grace. The voice of Christ's blood is louder, better, and final.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does it mean that Christ's blood 'speaks' — and what is it saying over your life?
  • 2.How does the contrast between Abel's blood (vengeance) and Christ's blood (mercy) change your understanding of the cross?
  • 3.What does Jesus as 'mediator of the new covenant' mean for your access to God?
  • 4.Where do you need to hear the blood of Christ speaking 'better things' over the voice of guilt or shame?

Devotional

And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant. You have come to Jesus. Not to a mountain of fire and darkness and terror like Sinai (v.18-21). To Jesus — the one who stands between you and God, who mediates a covenant that is better than everything that came before.

And to the blood of sprinkling. Blood. It is always about blood. The old covenant was ratified with blood sprinkled on the people. The new covenant is ratified with blood too — but not the blood of animals. The blood of Jesus, sprinkled on you, sealing the covenant permanently. Applied. Personal. Yours.

That speaketh better things than that of Abel. Abel's blood spoke from the ground. It cried out to God — and what it said was: avenge me. Punish the one who did this. Abel's blood demanded justice. It called for consequences.

Christ's blood speaks too. But it speaks better things. Where Abel's blood says punish, Christ's blood says forgive. Where Abel's blood demands vengeance, Christ's blood provides mercy. Every time your sin cries out for justice — and it does cry out — the blood of Christ speaks louder. Better. The blood says: paid. Forgiven. Covered.

Two bloods. Two voices. One demands what you deserve. The other provides what you do not deserve. The blood of Christ is speaking over your life right now — and what it says is better than anything your guilt, your shame, or your past can shout.
