- Verse 13
“The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof.”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 19:13 Mean?
"The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof." Egypt's leaders — the wisest, most educated ruling class in the ancient world — have become fools. The princes of Zoan (Tanis, the administrative capital) and Noph (Memphis, the cultural capital) have been deceived AND have seduced the nation. The leaders who should stabilize Egypt have destabilized it.
The phrase "become fools" (no'alu — they have acted foolishly, become stupid) is devastating when applied to Egypt's princes: Egypt was the ancient world's center of wisdom, learning, and administrative sophistication. For THEIR princes to become fools means the wisest nation has been made stupid. The most intelligent leadership class has been reduced to folly.
The "seduced Egypt" (hit'u et mitzrayim — they have caused Egypt to stagger/wander) means the leaders led the nation astray: the very people who were the STAY (cornerstone, support) of the tribes — the structural supports of Egyptian society — are the ones causing the staggering. The pillars have become the destabilizers.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What human wisdom are you trusting that God could make foolish overnight?
- 2.How does the WISEST nation becoming foolish challenge confidence in human intelligence?
- 3.What does the 'stay' (cornerstone) becoming the destabilizer teach about structural failure in leadership?
- 4.Where have you seen impressive human wisdom revealed as foolishness?
Devotional
Egypt's wisest leaders have become fools. The princes of the most sophisticated civilization in the world — the nation that invented writing, architecture, and administration — have been made stupid. And they've seduced the entire nation with their foolishness.
The 'become fools' is humiliating precisely because of who it describes: these aren't ignorant people made foolish. These are the PRINCES — the educated elite, the trained administrators, the people who were supposed to be the wisest of the wise. Egyptian wisdom was legendary. And Isaiah says: they've become fools. The most educated ruling class in the world has been made stupid by God.
The 'seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay' is the structural failure: the 'stay' (cornerstone) means these princes were the SUPPORT — the load-bearing columns of Egyptian society. The nation rested on their wisdom. And these pillars have become the mechanism of the nation's wandering. The supports have become the destabilizers. The cornerstones have shifted, and the whole building leans.
Isaiah's point is that no human wisdom is immune to divine judgment: Egypt's wisdom was the gold standard. Their princes were the best-trained leaders in the world. And God made them fools. The wisest nation was made stupid. The lesson: human wisdom, however impressive, is vulnerable to divine overturning. The intelligence that seems invincible can be made foolish in a moment.
What human wisdom — what impressive leadership or system — are you trusting that God could make foolish overnight?
