- Verse 4
“Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 41:4 Mean?
God declares His uniqueness with sweeping language: "Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he." God is the one who initiated history, directs its course, and will be present at its conclusion.
"The first, and with the last" is a claim of comprehensive presence across all of time. God isn't just the beginning or the end. He's both — and everything between. He was there at the start, and He'll be there at the finish, and He's with every generation in between.
The phrase "calling the generations from the beginning" means God summoned each generation into existence. History isn't a random sequence of births and deaths. It's a called-forth procession of peoples, each one summoned by God for a purpose. Your generation was called.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean to you that your generation was 'called' — summoned into existence by God?
- 2.How does 'with the last' (not just 'the last') change your understanding of God's presence at the end?
- 3.How does Jesus claiming to be 'the first and the last' connect to this verse about God's identity?
- 4.Does knowing that God has been present at every point in history change how you view your own moment in it?
Devotional
"I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he." God stands at the beginning of history and at the end of it — and walks through every generation in between.
This is God's answer to every question about who's in charge. Who made history happen? I did. Who called the generations into existence? I did. Who was there at the beginning? I was. Who will be there at the end? I will. And every moment between the first and the last? I am he.
The phrase "with the last" is quietly stunning. Not just "I am the last" — "I am with the last." God doesn't just bookend history. He accompanies it. The last generation doesn't face the end alone any more than the first generation faced the beginning alone. God is with both.
Your generation was called. Not randomly born — called. Summoned into existence by the same voice that called the first generation and will call the last. You exist because God spoke your time into being.
Revelation picks up this language when Jesus says: "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last" (Revelation 1:11). What Isaiah declares about God, Jesus claims for Himself. The one who called the generations from the beginning is the one who walked among them in the flesh.
You're not living in a random slice of time. You're living in a called generation, accompanied by the God who was first and will be last.
