“In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee.”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 54:14 Mean?
"In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee." God promises restored Israel four things: establishment in righteousness, distance from oppression, freedom from fear, and immunity from terror. The promises build from internal (established) to external (far from oppression) to emotional (no fear) to circumstantial (terror won't come near). The protection is comprehensive.
The phrase "in righteousness shalt thou be established" (bitzdaqah tikkonani — in righteousness you will be founded/secured) means the foundation of the restored community is RIGHTEOUSNESS: not military strength, not economic power, not political alliances — righteousness. The establishment is moral. The security is ethical. The foundation holds because the foundation is right.
The progression from "far from oppression" to "shall not fear" to "shall not come near thee" traces the complete removal of threat: first the oppression is distanced (far from you). Then the fear of oppression is removed (you won't fear). Then even the possibility of terror approaching is eliminated (it won't come near). The threat is moved back stage by stage until it's completely beyond reach.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What would it feel like if oppression were far, fear were gone, and terror couldn't even approach?
- 2.What does being established IN RIGHTEOUSNESS (not in strength) teach about true security?
- 3.How does the progression from distanced oppression to removed fear to blocked terror describe complete protection?
- 4.What foundation of righteousness would make your life unshakable?
Devotional
Established in righteousness. Far from oppression. Free from fear. Terror can't reach you. God's promise to restored Israel is a four-layer security system: the foundation is righteousness, the oppression is distanced, the fear is eliminated, and the terror is kept beyond approach.
The 'in righteousness established' puts the foundation first: before the oppression is removed, the establishment must be RIGHT. You're not secured by walls or weapons. You're secured by righteousness. The foundation that holds everything up is moral, not military. The establishment that can't be shaken is ethical, not economic. Righteousness is the building material of unshakable security.
The progression from oppression to fear to terror traces the complete removal: first, oppression is pushed FAR from you — it exists but can't touch you. Then fear is removed — not just the oppression but your FEAR of it is gone. Finally, terror itself is prevented from even APPROACHING — it can't come near. The protection starts with distance, deepens to emotional freedom, and culminates in total immunity. Each layer is more secure than the last.
The 'for it shall not come near thee' is the ultimate promise: terror won't even get close enough to threaten. The protective boundary isn't at your door. It's far from your door. The terror that terrorizes others won't reach your address. The approach itself is blocked.
What would it feel like to be established in righteousness so deeply that oppression is far, fear is gone, and terror can't even come near?
