“I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 65:2 Mean?
"I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people." God describes Himself in the posture of invitation — hands spread open, arms extended, reaching toward His people. And He's been doing it "all the day" — not a momentary gesture but sustained, continuous, all-day reaching. And the people He reaches toward are rebellious — they walk "in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts."
The image of God with outstretched hands is both welcoming and heartbreaking. This is the posture of a parent calling a toddler to come — arms open, hands ready to receive. But the toddler walks the other direction. All day, the hands stay open. All day, the child walks away.
Paul quotes this verse in Romans 10:21 to describe God's persistent invitation to Israel. The passage becomes evidence of divine patience and human stubbornness — a God who doesn't stop reaching toward people who don't stop walking away.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Can you picture God reaching toward you with open hands right now? How does that image affect you?
- 2.What 'own thoughts' have you been following instead of turning toward God's outstretched arms?
- 3.Why doesn't God withdraw the invitation after persistent rejection?
- 4.What would it look like to turn around and walk into those open hands today?
Devotional
God's hands are open. All day. Spread wide. Reaching toward a people who walk the other direction.
This is one of the most heartbreaking images of God in all of Scripture. Not wrathful God. Not distant God. Not indifferent God. Reaching God. A God with His arms out, all day long, toward a people who ignore the invitation.
The phrase "all the day" is the devastating detail. Not a momentary offer. Not a one-time invitation that, when rejected, gets withdrawn. All day. Hour after hour. Morning through evening. The hands stay open. The invitation stands. The reaching doesn't stop because the rebellion doesn't stop.
The rebellious people walk "after their own thoughts." They don't follow a better plan — they follow their own plan. They don't choose a superior path — they choose their path. The alternative to God's outstretched hands isn't a compelling rival. It's just self-direction. Their own thoughts. Which are "not good."
God's hands are still open right now. Toward you. Even if you've been walking the other direction. Even if you've been following your own thoughts into dead ends. The hands haven't closed. The day hasn't ended. The invitation is the same as it was this morning: come.
How long will you walk in the other direction while God's hands stay open?
