Jeremiah 32:34

Jeremiah 32:34
But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.

My Notes

What Does Jeremiah 32:34 Mean?

"But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it." The people placed their detestable idols INSIDE the Temple — the house that carries God's name. The placement is deliberate and the result is defilement. The abominations weren't set up in a field or a private home. They were installed in GOD'S house. The desecration targets the most sacred space with the most offensive objects.

The phrase "set their abominations in the house" (vayyasimu shiqqutzehem babayit — they placed their detestable things in the house) describes intentional installation: the idols didn't drift in. They were SET — placed, installed, positioned deliberately. The abominations were carried through the Temple doors and placed inside by human hands. The desecration was a construction project.

The "which is called by my name, to defile it" (asher niqra shemi alav letam'o — upon which My name is called, to make it unclean) specifies both the identity and the purpose: the house is identified BY GOD'S NAME. The defilement is identified as the PURPOSE of the placement. The 'to defile' suggests intentionality — the placing of abominations wasn't accidental contamination. It was purposeful pollution of the space that bears God's identity.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What have you placed in the space that bears God's name — your heart, your home, your worship?
  • 2.How does the deliberateness of the placement (carried in, set up, installed) describe intentional spiritual pollution?
  • 3.What does defilement being the PURPOSE teach about how sin operates in sacred spaces?
  • 4.What 'abomination' needs to be removed from the 'house called by God's name' in your life?

Devotional

They put their idols inside God's house. Deliberately. Intentionally. They carried detestable things through the Temple doors and installed them in the space that bears God's name. The desecration wasn't accidental. It was a project.

The 'set their abominations' is an ACT — a construction project of desecration: someone carved or purchased the idol. Someone carried it to the Temple. Someone walked through the courts. Someone placed it inside. The setting is deliberate, physical, step-by-step. The defilement required effort. The pollution was work.

The 'house which is called by my name' is the identifying detail that makes the desecration maximum: this isn't ANY house. It's the house that carries GOD'S NAME. The identity of the building is stamped with the identity of the God who dwells there. Putting abominations in THIS house is putting them in God's living room. The name on the building is the name being disrespected.

The 'to defile it' reveals purpose: the people didn't accidentally bring the wrong things into the Temple. They DEFILED it — purposefully. The pollution was the point. The contamination was the goal. The mixing of the sacred and the detestable was intentional. The house that should hold only what God approves was deliberately filled with what God abhors.

What abominations have you set in the space that bears God's name — in your heart, your home, your worship?
