Job 35:9

Job 35:9
By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

My Notes

What Does Job 35:9 Mean?

"By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty." Elihu describes the CRY of the oppressed — the universal human sound that suffering produces. The oppressed CRY because of the MULTITUDE of oppressions (not a single incident but accumulated, compounded, systemic suffering). They cry out because of the ARM of the mighty — the power of the powerful wielded against the powerless.

The phrase "the multitude of oppressions" (merov ashuqqim — from the abundance of oppressions) emphasizes VOLUME and ACCUMULATION: not one oppression but MANY. Not a single injustice but a SYSTEM of injustice. The oppressed cry because the oppressions are MULTIPLIED — stacked, compounded, coming from every direction. The weight isn't one stone. It's a mountain of stones.

The phrase "the arm of the mighty" (zeroa' rabbim — the arm/power of the great ones) identifies the SOURCE of oppression: the POWERFUL. The 'arm' is the symbol of STRENGTH used unjustly — the capacity that should protect instead CRUSHES. The mighty who should use their strength to defend the weak use it to OPPRESS the weak. The arm that should lift instead presses down.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Is your cry reactive (against the oppression) or directional (toward the One who can address it)?
  • 2.What does the 'multitude' of oppressions teach about suffering that is systemic, not single-incident?
  • 3.How does the 'arm of the mighty' (strength used wrongly) describe the perversion of power?
  • 4.What's the difference between crying (reactive sound) and praying (directional appeal) in your suffering?

Devotional

The oppressed CRY — and the cry has a cause: the MULTITUDE of oppressions. Not one injustice but MANY. Not a single incident but a SYSTEM. The crying is proportional to the volume of the suffering. The multiplied oppressions produce the multiplied cries. The weight is cumulative.

The 'ARM of the mighty' is the instrument: the powerful use their STRENGTH against the powerless. The arm that has capacity — the arm that COULD protect, COULD lift, COULD defend — instead CRUSHES. The oppression is the perversion of strength. The mighty use their might wrongly. The strong arm becomes the weapon against the weak.

Elihu's point (verse 10-13) is that the oppressed cry WITHOUT TURNING TO GOD: 'None saith, Where is God my maker?' (verse 10). The cry is AGAINST the oppressor but not TOWARD the Maker. The pain produces a sound. But the sound has no DIRECTION — it screams against the injustice without appealing to the Justice-Giver. The cry is reactive, not directional. The suffering shouts but doesn't pray.

The distinction between CRYING and PRAYING is Elihu's contribution: both involve sound. Both express pain. But crying is reactive — it responds to the oppression. Praying is directional — it appeals to the One who can address the oppression. The cry says 'this hurts.' The prayer says 'God, help.' The difference is the AUDIENCE. The oppressed cry. The worshiper prays.

Is your cry reactive (screaming at the oppression) or directional (appealing to the One who can address it)?
