Summary
John structures his gospel around seven miracles he calls "signs" — turning water to wine, healing a man blind from birth, raising Lazarus from the dead. Each one is a window into something true about who Jesus is.
Alongside the signs are seven "I am" statements — Jesus describing himself as bread, light, a gate, a shepherd, the way, the truth, the life. These are bold, direct claims that get him into serious trouble.
Some of the most intimate conversations in all of Scripture happen in John. Nicodemus, a religious leader, comes under cover of night with real questions. A Samaritan woman at a well is surprised anyone is speaking to her at all.
The word "love" pulses through the second half of the book. At his last meal with friends, Jesus gives one command: love one another the way he has loved them.
John ends with a quiet moment on a beach — Jesus reinstating Peter after his betrayal. It's tender, specific, and unforgettable.
Devotional
John opens with one of the most stunning sentences ever written: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Before you even meet Jesus in this gospel, you're being asked to think about what it means that he existed before time.
Then that eternal Word becomes flesh. Takes on skin. Gets tired and weeps and bleeds. The theological becomes startlingly physical.
The woman at the well in chapter 4 is one of the most honest conversations in Scripture. Jesus knows everything about her — everything — and keeps talking to her anyway. That's not a small thing.
Love in John isn't sentimental. It's the kind that washes feet, lays down its life, and shows up at the tomb even when hope seems finished.
What would it mean for you to be truly known — all of it — and still met with that kind of love?
Historical Background
John's gospel was written by the apostle John — one of Jesus's closest friends — likely late in his life, long after the other three gospels were already circulating. He knew people had read those accounts. He wasn't trying to repeat them.
He wrote this for believers who needed to go deeper — to understand not just what Jesus did, but who he actually was. It's more theological, more reflective, written from decades of sitting with these memories.
John sits fourth among the gospels and reads completely differently from the other three. There's no birth story like Luke's, no urgent pace like Mark's. It opens like a poem: "In the beginning was the Word."
If the other gospels show you what Jesus did, John wants to show you who Jesus is — and what that means for you, personally.
