My Notes
What Does Joshua 15:35 Mean?
Among the cities listed in Judah's inheritance appears Adullam—the cave where David will later hide from Saul (1 Samuel 22:1). And Azekah—the city near which David will kill Goliath (1 Samuel 17:1). And Socoh—mentioned in the Goliath narrative as the location of the Philistine camp. The names in Joshua's land allocation are the addresses of Israel's most famous future stories. The inheritance list reads like the table of contents for what's coming.
At the time of Joshua's allocation, these are just city names in a tribal inheritance. Nobody knows that Adullam's cave will shelter a future king. Nobody knows that Azekah's valley will host the most famous duel in history. The names have no special weight—just entries on a list of thirty-six cities assigned to Judah. The significance is completely hidden from the present.
The presence of these names in a mundane land allocation list demonstrates how God hides future significance in present ordinariness. The cities where the greatest stories will happen are allocated without fanfare—just names in a column, given to a tribe that doesn't know what these locations will produce. The most important real estate in Israel's future is distributed as routine inventory in Joshua's present.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What ordinary location in your life might be the future site of your most important story?
- 2.God hides future significance in present ordinariness. How does that change how you view your current, unremarkable circumstances?
- 3.Adullam and Azekah were just names on a list. What 'name on your list' might become the address of something extraordinary?
- 4.If God distributes the most important locations as routine inventory, what might be hidden in the ordinariness of your daily environment?
Devotional
Adullam. Socoh. Azekah. Just names on a list. Cities assigned to Judah in a routine land allocation. Nobody reading this list in Joshua's time knows that Adullam's cave will shelter David, that Azekah's valley will host Goliath's death, that these ordinary names will become the most famous addresses in Israel's history. The significance is completely hidden.
God distributes the most important future locations as routine present inventory. No fanfare. No prophetic announcement. No flag on the map that says: this is where the greatest king hides, this is where the giant falls. Just: Jarmuth, and Adullam, Socoh, and Azekah. Four names in a list of thirty-six. Future significance wrapped in present ordinariness.
The pattern is God's signature: He hides what's coming in what's already here. The city that's just a name on a land-allocation list today is the stage for the most important events in the nation's future. The place you're living in right now—the ordinary address, the unremarkable location, the city name nobody outside your area knows—might be the Adullam or the Azekah of your story. The significance isn't visible yet. It's hiding in the ordinariness.
Look at the names on your list. The ordinary places, the mundane locations, the unremarkable addresses of your daily life. The future significance of where you are might not be visible to you. But the God who allocated Adullam and Azekah to Judah without explanation is the same God who placed you where you are. The list is routine. The locations are ordinary. And the stories that will happen there haven't been written yet.
