“And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.”
My Notes
What Does Joshua 9:14 Mean?
"And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD." The Gibeonites deceive Israel into making a peace treaty by pretending to be from a distant land. They carry moldy bread, worn-out shoes, and patched wineskins as props. Israel examines the evidence — the food, the clothing — and concludes the story is true. They make a binding covenant. And the narrator inserts this devastating editorial: they didn't ask God.
The verse is a masterclass in the failure of human judgment without divine consultation. Israel evaluated all the evidence, applied sound reasoning, and reached a perfectly logical conclusion — which was completely wrong. The evidence was manufactured. Their eyes were deceived. And the one source that couldn't be fooled — God — was never consulted.
Reflection Questions
- 1.When have you been deceived because the evidence was convincing but you didn't consult God?
- 2.Why is manufactured evidence so effective against human judgment?
- 3.What major decision in your life needs divine counsel rather than just logical analysis?
- 4.How do you practically 'ask counsel at the mouth of the LORD' before making binding commitments?
Devotional
They looked at the evidence. Examined the bread. Inspected the shoes. Evaluated the wineskins. Applied perfectly reasonable human logic. And got completely deceived. Because they never asked God.
This is one of the most practical warnings in the entire Old Testament. Israel's mistake wasn't stupidity. Their analysis was reasonable. The moldy bread and worn sandals were convincing evidence. If you'd been there, you'd probably have reached the same conclusion. The evidence supported the Gibeonites' story. The logic was sound. And the conclusion was dead wrong.
Because manufactured evidence produces manufactured conclusions. Someone who's determined to deceive you will produce props that pass your inspection. Your eyes can be fooled. Your reasoning can be manipulated. Your experience can be leveraged against you. The only faculty that can't be manufactured against is divine counsel — and that's the one thing Israel didn't use.
"Asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD." They had access to the Urim and Thummim. They could have consulted God directly. Instead, they relied on their own assessment of the situation and made a covenant they couldn't break. For the rest of Israel's history, they'll be bound by a treaty they never should have made — because they trusted their eyes more than God's voice.
Before you sign, commit, agree, or decide — especially when the evidence looks convincing — ask God. Not as a formality. As a survival strategy.
