My Notes
What Does Leviticus 23:2 Mean?
"Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts." God claims ownership of Israel's festivals: these are MY feasts. Not Israel's cultural celebrations. Not human religious inventions. God's appointed times, designed by God, owned by God, and given to Israel to observe.
The word "feasts" (mo'adim) means appointed times — scheduled meetings between God and His people. The festivals aren't optional social gatherings. They're divine appointments. God set the dates. The calendar is His calendar. You don't choose when to celebrate — you show up when He scheduled it.
The phrase "holy convocations" (miqra'ey qodesh) means sacred assemblies — gatherings that are called by God for the purpose of holiness. You're summoned, not invited. The convocation is a calling together — God calls, and the people assemble. The initiative is divine. The response is human.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'appointed times' on God's calendar are you treating as optional?
- 2.How does knowing the feasts are GOD'S feasts change your approach to worship?
- 3.What does being 'summoned' to a holy convocation differ from being 'invited' to a service?
- 4.What would it look like to treat your worship calendar as divine appointments rather than personal preferences?
Devotional
These are MY feasts. God's possessive pronoun over the calendar. The festivals Israel observes aren't human traditions — they're divine appointments. God set the dates, named the celebrations, and claims them as His own.
The word 'appointed times' reframes every feast day: it's not a holiday you choose to observe. It's a meeting God scheduled. He put it on the calendar. He determined the date. He designed the worship. You show up. The initiative is entirely His. The response is entirely yours.
The 'holy convocations' — sacred assemblies — are called gatherings. You're summoned by God to assemble with other believers at a specific time for a specific purpose. The calling isn't optional. The convocation isn't a suggestion. God calls. You come together. The gathering is as sacred as the purpose behind it.
The possessive 'MY feasts' means the festivals belong to God, not to the culture. They're not Israel's traditions that God endorses. They're God's designs that Israel executes. The ownership determines the authority: if these are God's feasts, you don't modify them, skip them, or replace them with your preferences. You observe what the Owner scheduled.
What 'appointed times' has God placed on your calendar — times of worship, sabbath rest, seasonal reflection — that you're treating as optional because you've forgotten they're His?
