- Verse 37
“For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.”
My Notes
What Does Luke 22:37 Mean?
"This that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors." Jesus quotes Isaiah 53:12 and applies it to Himself: He will be counted among criminals. The prophecy must be fulfilled — it's not optional or avoidable. What was written will be accomplished.
The word "must" (dei) carries divine necessity — this has to happen. Not because circumstances force it but because Scripture requires it. The prophetic word creates an obligation that Jesus deliberately fulfills. He's not a victim of circumstance; He's the fulfillment of prophecy.
The phrase "reckoned among the transgressors" describes social and legal classification: Jesus will be categorized as a criminal. Crucified between two thieves, He will be officially listed as a transgressor. The innocent one will be formally counted as guilty — not by accident but by divine design.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does 'must' — divine necessity — teach about the cross being planned rather than accidental?
- 2.How does being 'reckoned among transgressors' make Jesus' substitution visible?
- 3.What does it mean for the innocent to be officially classified as guilty for your sake?
- 4.How does the swap — He reckoned as sinner, you reckoned as righteous — change your self-understanding?
Devotional
He must be reckoned among the transgressors. Not might be. Must be. The prophecy requires it. The Scripture demands it. The innocent one will be officially classified as a criminal — and it has to happen this way.
Jesus doesn't stumble into the cross. He walks into a prophecy written seven centuries earlier. Isaiah said the Messiah would be numbered among transgressors. Jesus says: that's about to happen to Me. The things written about Me are being accomplished. I'm not being overwhelmed by circumstances — I'm fulfilling a script.
The reckoning among transgressors is the substitution made visible. Jesus doesn't just die — He dies as a criminal. He's categorized alongside the guilty. His cross is between two thieves'. His charge reads like a political crime. From every visible angle, He's a transgressor. And that classification is the point: He takes the criminal's place because He's taking the criminal's punishment.
The word "must" means there was no other way. Not "it would be nice if" or "this is one option among several." Must. The salvation of humanity required the righteous one to be reckoned as unrighteous. The clean one had to be counted dirty. The holy one had to be classified as a sinner. Because that's the only way the sinners could be reclassified as holy.
He was reckoned as what you are so that you could be reckoned as what He is. The swap is the gospel. And it must happen.
