My Notes
What Does Mark 16:20 Mean?
Mark 16:20 is the final verse of Mark's Gospel, and it compresses the entire story of the early church into a single sentence: "And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen." Three movements: they went, the Lord worked, and signs confirmed.
The phrase "the Lord working with them" is the theological center of the verse. The disciples didn't go out alone. They went, and God worked alongside them — the Greek synergountos means co-laboring, partnering. This isn't human effort blessed from a distance. It's divine partnership. The preaching was theirs; the power was His. They supplied the obedience; He supplied the confirmation. Neither part works without the other — the Lord doesn't confirm words that aren't spoken, and the disciples can't produce signs on their own.
"Confirming the word with signs following" describes signs as secondary to the word — they follow the preaching, they don't replace it. The signs serve the message, not the other way around. This is an important ordering. The early church wasn't a signs movement that occasionally preached. It was a preaching movement that God confirmed with signs. The authority lay in the word spoken; the signs were God's exclamation point. Mark ends his Gospel not with a theological summary but with a picture of movement — people going, God working, truth being confirmed. It's an ending that's really a beginning.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Are you waiting for God to confirm something before you step out — and is that wisdom or avoidance?
- 2.Where in your life have you experienced God 'working with you' — showing up in the middle of your obedience rather than before it?
- 3.What does it mean to you that signs follow the word rather than precede it?
- 4.What's one step of obedience you've been delaying that might be exactly where God is waiting to meet you?
Devotional
"They went forth." That's where it starts. Not with signs. Not with strategies. Not with waiting for perfect conditions. They went. And as they went, the Lord worked with them. Not before them, not after them — with them. Side by side. Co-laboring.
There's a pattern here that applies directly to wherever you are right now. If you're waiting for God to move before you step out, you might be waiting forever. The signs follow the going. God confirms the word after it's spoken, not before. He doesn't give you proof in advance that it'll work. He gives you proof in the middle of the obedience. You have to go first.
That's terrifying and liberating at the same time. Terrifying because there's no guarantee up front. Liberating because it means you don't need everything figured out before you move. You need a message and a willingness to go. God handles the confirmation. Whatever He's asking you to do — the conversation, the step of faith, the new direction — stop waiting for signs before you go. Go, and the signs will follow. That's the pattern of the entire New Testament church, and it hasn't changed. The Lord still works with those who go. The question is whether you'll go.
