- Matthew
- Chapter 16
- Verse 18
“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
My Notes
What Does Matthew 16:18 Mean?
Jesus makes the most foundational statement about the church: upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. The church has a builder (Jesus), a foundation (the rock), and a guarantee (hell cannot defeat it).
The identity of the rock has been debated for centuries: Peter himself, Peter's confession of faith, or Christ as the foundation. What is clear is that Jesus is the builder. I will build. The church is his project.
"The gates of hell shall not prevail against it" — the gates of Hades represent the power of death and the underworld. The image is either defensive (the gates cannot hold the church back) or aggressive (the gates attacking the church and failing). Either way, death loses.
The church is not a human institution trying to survive. It is a divine construction that cannot be defeated. The builder guarantees the outcome.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does Jesus being the builder of the church mean for human anxiety about the church's survival?
- 2.How have the 'gates of hell' failed to prevail against the church throughout history?
- 3.What does the rock represent — and what does it mean for the church's foundation?
- 4.Where do you need confidence that hell's gates will not prevail in your situation?
Devotional
Upon this rock I will build my church. I will build. Jesus is the builder. The church is not a human invention. It is Christ's construction — built on a foundation he chose, with his own hands, according to his own design.
The gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Hell has gates. The power of death has a stronghold. And it cannot prevail. The church — built by Christ, on the rock — is stronger than death itself.
The gates of hell have been trying for two thousand years. Every persecution, every empire that tried to destroy the church, every cultural movement that declared it irrelevant — the gates have not prevailed. The church is still here. Still being built. Still advancing.
The guarantee is from the builder. Not from human effort. Not from institutional strength. From Jesus. The one who said I will build is the one who guarantees the gates will not prevail.
When the church looks weak — when it seems like culture is winning, when persecution is intensifying, when the gates of hell seem to be closing in — remember who the builder is. And remember his guarantee: they shall not prevail.
The church is not yours to save. It is his to build. And nothing in hell can stop what he is constructing.
