My Notes
What Does Matthew 28:3 Mean?
"His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow." The angel at the empty tomb is described in two images: a face like LIGHTNING and clothing white as SNOW. The appearance communicates two things simultaneously: terrifying POWER (lightning — destructive, brilliant, instantaneous) and absolute PURITY (snow — white, clean, unblemished). The resurrection's first messenger carries both the terror and the holiness of the event on his face and his clothes.
The phrase "countenance was like lightning" (hē eidea autou hōs astrapē — his appearance/face was as lightning) means the angel's face FLASHED: lightning is simultaneously the brightest and the most frightening natural phenomenon. The face didn't just glow. It FLASHED — with the intensity, the speed, and the overwhelming brilliance of a lightning strike. The face communicated power that couldn't be looked at comfortably.
The "raiment white as snow" (to endyma autou leukon hōs chiōn — his clothing was white as snow) adds PURITY to the power: the lightning-face communicates terrifying brightness. The snow-white clothing communicates absolute cleanliness. The angel is both POWERFUL and PURE — the combination that defines holiness. The tomb that held death is now attended by a being radiating life.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does the resurrection still make you tremble AND marvel — or has it been domesticated?
- 2.What does lightning (terrifying power) combined with snow (absolute purity) teach about holiness?
- 3.How does the angel's appearance communicating BOTH terror and beauty describe the nature of resurrection?
- 4.What would it look like to approach the empty tomb with the awe that made the guards faint?
Devotional
Lightning for a face. Snow for clothing. The angel at the empty tomb carries the resurrection's two signatures: terrifying POWER and absolute PURITY. The face that communicates lightning-brilliance. The clothing that communicates snow-whiteness. The tomb that held death is now attended by a being that radiates life.
The 'countenance like lightning' is the TERROR of the resurrection: the angel's face doesn't gently glow. It FLASHES — with the intensity of a lightning bolt, with the brilliance that makes you shield your eyes, with the power that communicates 'something MASSIVE has happened here.' The guards fainted (verse 4). The face that produced the fainting is the face that announces the rising.
The 'raiment white as snow' is the PURITY of the resurrection: snow is the purest, cleanest, most uniformly white substance the ancient world knew. The angel's clothing carries that purity — not dingy white, not off-white, not human-laundry white. SNOW white. The purity of the clothing says: what happened here is CLEAN. The resurrection is holy. The empty tomb is the site of the purest act in history.
The combination — lightning AND snow — is the HOLINESS combination: power and purity together. The lightning alone would be terrifying but ambiguous. The snow alone would be beautiful but passive. Together, they communicate what the Bible means by HOLY: overwhelming power that is absolutely pure. The resurrection's first messenger embodies both qualities. The event that emptied the tomb requires both to announce it.
Does the resurrection make you tremble (lightning) AND marvel (snow) — or have you domesticated it into something comfortable?
