“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.”
My Notes
What Does Matthew 4:23 Mean?
Matthew summarizes Jesus's early ministry in Galilee with three activities: Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
Teaching in their synagogues — Jesus operated within the existing religious structures. The synagogue was the center of Jewish community life and education. Jesus did not start a new institution. He entered the existing one and taught within it. The teaching was instructional — explaining, interpreting, opening Scripture.
Preaching the gospel of the kingdom — distinct from teaching. Preaching (kerusso) means to herald, to proclaim publicly like a town crier. The content is specific: the gospel (good news) of the kingdom. The kingdom of God has arrived. The king is present. The proclamation is not invitation to discussion. It is announcement of reality.
Healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease — the healing is comprehensive. All manner — every kind, every category. Jesus did not specialize in certain conditions. He healed everything. The healings authenticated the teaching and preaching — the kingdom that Jesus announced was visible in the healings that accompanied the announcement.
The three activities together form a complete ministry: teaching (the mind), preaching (the will — calling for response), and healing (the body). Jesus addressed the whole person — intellectual, volitional, and physical. The kingdom of God is not merely spiritual. It touches every dimension of human existence.
This verse is echoed in Matthew 9:35 with identical language, forming a literary bracket around the Sermon on the Mount (5-7) and the healing narratives (8-9).
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does Jesus going 'about all Galilee' reveal about the intentional, mobile nature of his ministry?
- 2.How do teaching, preaching, and healing together address the whole person — mind, will, and body?
- 3.What does 'all manner of sickness and all manner of disease' reveal about the scope of Jesus's power?
- 4.How does the gospel of the kingdom — good news that the king is here — differ from religion as a self-improvement program?
Devotional
Jesus went about all Galilee. All Galilee — not one town. Not one synagogue. He went about — traveling, moving, covering ground. The ministry was mobile, intentional, reaching as many people as possible. Jesus did not wait for people to come to him. He went to them.
Teaching in their synagogues. He taught. He explained. He opened Scripture and helped people understand what it actually said. The teaching was within the existing structures — synagogues, the places people already gathered. Jesus met people where they were, in the spaces they already occupied.
Preaching the gospel of the kingdom. He preached — not suggested, not discussed, not floated as a possibility. He proclaimed: the kingdom of God is here. The king has arrived. The good news is not coming. It is here. The preaching demanded a response.
Healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease. All manner. Every kind. No condition was beyond his power. No disease too severe. No sickness too rare. The healings were the visible evidence that the kingdom Jesus announced was real. The words and the works matched. What he preached, he proved.
This is who Jesus is: teacher, preacher, healer. He addresses your mind (teaching), your will (preaching), and your body (healing). The kingdom he announced is not a spiritual concept disconnected from physical reality. It touches everything — your understanding, your choices, and your suffering. All of you. All manner.
