“Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion's whelp, and none made them afraid?”
My Notes
What Does Nahum 2:11 Mean?
"Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion's whelp, and none made them afraid?" Nahum taunts the fallen Nineveh: WHERE is the lions' den now? WHERE is the feeding place of the cubs? The city that was a predator's lair — where lions walked freely and nobody dared frighten them — is GONE. The taunt asks the question that the rubble answers: the dwelling of the lions has become the ruin of a city.
The phrase "where is the dwelling of the lions" (ayyeh me'on arayot — where is the habitation of the lions) uses the rhetorical 'where' of mockery: the answer is visible — the dwelling is DESTROYED. The 'where' isn't seeking information. It's making a point. The lion's den that seemed permanent is gone. The question mocks the impermanence of what seemed invincible.
The lion terminology layers — lions, young lions, old lion, lion's whelp — describes a DYNASTY: every generation of the predator lived here. The old lion walked here. The young lions fed here. The whelps were born here. The ENTIRE lineage of predators operated from this one location. And now the location is empty. Every generation of lions is gone.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What seemingly permanent power in your world has been emptied — and does the 'where' taunt apply?
- 2.How does using Nineveh's OWN symbol (the lion) to mock its fall describe divine irony?
- 3.What does every generation of lions being gone teach about the end of dynasties?
- 4.What 'fearless' force in your experience has been made to fear — or to vanish?
Devotional
WHERE is the lion's den? Where the old lion walked? Where the cubs fed? Where the whelps were born and NOBODY made them afraid? The taunt asks the question the ruins answer: the lion's den is gone. Every generation of the predator — gone. The feeding place — empty. The dynasty of lions — ended.
The 'where' is the taunt of the fallen: Nineveh was the LION among nations — the predator that devoured, the beast that nobody dared challenge, the den that nobody approached in fear. The lion imagery was Nineveh's OWN self-image — the Assyrians used lion imagery extensively in their art and propaganda. Nahum takes their OWN symbol and asks: where is it now? Your lion's den — where is it? Your predator's lair — where did it go?
The GENERATIONAL layering — old lion, lion, young lions, lion's whelp — means the dynasty is destroyed: not just one generation of rulers but the ENTIRE lineage. The old king walked here (the established power). The young lions fed here (the heirs apparent). The whelps were born here (the next generation). The dynasty that seemed self-perpetuating has been entirely eliminated. The breeding ground is empty.
The 'none made them afraid' was the former reality: Nineveh's lions feared NOTHING. Nobody challenged them. Nobody made them tremble. The fearlessness was absolute. And now — the fearless are gone. The unchallengeable have been challenged. The den that nobody dared approach has been not just approached but DESTROYED. The lions that feared nothing are nowhere.
What 'lion's den' that seemed permanent and unchallengeable has been emptied — and does the 'where' apply?
