“And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.”
My Notes
What Does Numbers 13:26 Mean?
The twelve spies return from forty days in Canaan and report to the entire congregation at Kadesh in the wilderness of Paran. They bring back word — davar, a report, an account — and they bring back fruit. The physical evidence of the land's goodness is in their hands: the cluster of grapes so large two men carried it on a pole (v. 23), along with pomegranates and figs. The fruit doesn't lie. The land is exactly as abundant as God promised.
The congregation hears the report together — kol-adath b'nei Yisra'el, the entire assembly. Moses, Aaron, and every Israelite are present. The spies' words and the spies' fruit will both be examined in public. The evidence will be shared. The interpretation of the evidence, however, will split ten against two — and the majority interpretation will cost an entire generation the promised land.
The verse is transitional — the calm before the storm. The fruit is displayed. The report is delivered. And in the next verses, the majority will acknowledge the land's beauty and then say "nevertheless" (v. 28) — the single word that turns evidence of God's faithfulness into an argument for retreat. The fruit proved the promise was true. The fear decided the promise wasn't enough.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'fruit' has God shown you — tangible evidence that His promise is real — that you're still not acting on?
- 2.Where has fear overridden evidence in your life, making the proof irrelevant because the giants looked bigger?
- 3.The spies brought the fruit to the whole congregation. Who do you share evidence of God's faithfulness with — and does their response strengthen or weaken your faith?
- 4.The fruit confirmed the promise but didn't produce the courage. Where is your evidence strong and your courage weak?
Devotional
They brought back the fruit. Grapes so heavy two men carried the cluster between them. Pomegranates. Figs. Physical, visible, edible evidence that the land was everything God said it was. The proof was literally in their hands. And it didn't matter. Ten of the twelve spies would look at the fruit and still say: we can't go in.
That's the most bewildering thing about fear: it doesn't respond to evidence. The grapes were real. The abundance was visible. The promise of God was confirmed by forty days of reconnaissance. And the majority still chose fear over faith. The fruit hung there — the undeniable evidence of God's truthfulness — and the people said: but the giants. The evidence said go. The fear said stay. And fear won. Not because the evidence was weak. Because the fear was louder.
You've done this. God has given you fruit — visible evidence that His promise is real, tangible proof that the direction He's calling you is abundant. And you've looked at the fruit and said: but the giants. But the risks. But the obstacles that the fruit can't make me forget. The evidence is in your hands. The decision is in your heart. And the heart, if it's dominated by fear, will override any amount of evidence. The grapes don't help you if you're not willing to eat them. The fruit confirms the promise. But only faith crosses the border into it.
