Psalms 119:14

Psalms 119:14
I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 119:14 Mean?

"I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches." The psalmist's VALUATION: God's testimonies are worth AS MUCH AS all riches. The comparison is ECONOMIC — the testimonies are placed on a scale against WEALTH, and they MATCH. The joy from God's word equals the joy that ALL RICHES produce. Not some riches. ALL riches. The word's value is measured against the total of earthly prosperity — and the word wins (or at minimum, ties).

The phrase "I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies" (bederekh edvotekha sasti — in the way/path of your testimonies I have rejoiced/been glad) makes the REJOICING about the WAY — the PATH — of the testimonies, not just the content. The testimonies create a ROAD. The word provides a DIRECTION. The rejoicing is about the PATH that the testimonies illuminate — the life-direction that God's instructions create.

The phrase "as much as in all riches" (kekhol hon — like all wealth/abundance) is the COMPARISON: the psalmist has experienced BOTH — the joy of riches and the joy of God's word — and declares them EQUAL. The comparison requires EXPERIENCE with both. The valuation isn't theoretical. It's the testimony of someone who has TASTED wealth and TASTED the word and found them equally satisfying.

The 'ALL riches' (kol hon) is the TOTALITY: not some money, not partial wealth, but ALL riches — the complete sum of earthly prosperity. The psalmist weighs the ENTIRE category of wealth against the testimonies and finds them in BALANCE. The word is as valuable as everything money can buy. Combined.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Would your behavior with Scripture look different if you valued it as much as ALL riches?
  • 2.What does the comparison requiring EXPERIENCE with both (word and wealth) teach about informed valuation?
  • 3.How does rejoicing in the WAY (path, direction) of the testimonies differ from just reading them?
  • 4.What riches have you experienced that God's word has proven equally satisfying to?

Devotional

God's testimonies = ALL riches. The valuation is extraordinary: the joy of the WORD matches the joy of ALL WEALTH. Not some wealth. ALL of it — every form of earthly prosperity combined. The psalmist has experienced both and declares them EQUAL. The testimonies are as satisfying as everything money can buy.

The 'WAY of thy testimonies' is the PATH-joy: the rejoicing isn't just in READING the word but in WALKING the direction it provides. The testimonies create a road. The instructions illuminate a path. The joy is in the WALKING — the life-direction that God's word establishes. The journey is the joy. The path is the pleasure.

The 'AS MUCH AS' comparison requires EXPERIENCE with both sides: the psalmist hasn't rejected wealth from ignorance. He's TASTED it — and tasted the word — and found them equal. The comparison isn't the poverty-stricken declaring wealth worthless. It's someone who KNOWS wealth declaring the word equally valuable. The valuation comes from experience, not abstinence.

The 'ALL riches' raises the stakes: not 'the word is worth more than a little money.' The word is worth as much as ALL riches — every mansion, every investment, every luxury, every comfort that wealth provides. COMBINED. The total value of earthly prosperity is the comparison-point. And the testimonies MATCH it. The word is that valuable.

What if you valued God's word AS MUCH AS all riches — would your behavior with Scripture look different?
