Psalms 119:98

Psalms 119:98
Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.

My Notes

What Does Psalms 119:98 Mean?

The psalmist claims that God's commandments have made him wiser than his enemies — and the reason is stunning: "for they are ever with me." The commandments don't just provide occasional wisdom. They're a permanent companion. The advantage isn't in the content alone but in the constancy of engagement.

The Hebrew is singular: "it is ever with me" — the marginal note captures this. The entire body of God's commands functions as one unified companion that never leaves. The psalmist has internalized Scripture so thoroughly that it's always present, always accessible, always shaping his thinking.

The wisdom superiority over enemies isn't about intelligence. It's about access. The enemies may be clever, but they don't have God's word as a constant companion. The psalmist does. And that permanent access produces a wisdom that outstrips every human strategy.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Is God's word 'ever with you' — a constant companion — or something you visit occasionally?
  • 2.How does the constancy of engagement with Scripture produce wisdom that intensity alone can't?
  • 3.Where have you experienced God's word giving you an advantage in a situation your natural wisdom couldn't handle?
  • 4.What would it look like to carry Scripture with you more consistently — not just read it, but live with it?

Devotional

His commandments made you wiser than your enemies. Not because you're smarter. Because they're always with you.

The psalmist's advantage isn't intellect. It's access. He has something his enemies don't: a constant companion — God's word — that never leaves, never lies, never gives bad advice. And because it's always with him, he sees things they can't. He understands things they miss. He makes decisions they wouldn't think of.

This is what happens when Scripture stops being something you visit and starts being something you carry. When God's word is "ever with you" — in your mind while you drive, in your thoughts while you work, in your perspective while you make decisions — it produces a wisdom that simply isn't available any other way.

Your enemies might be more experienced, more educated, more connected. But if God's word is your constant companion, you have an advantage they can't match. Not because you're special, but because your companion is.

The key word is "ever." Not "sometimes." Not "on Sundays." Ever. The wisdom comes from the constancy, not the intensity. It's not about marathon Bible study sessions. It's about a word that lives with you — in the morning, in the meeting, in the middle of the night.

Make it your companion. Keep it with you. And watch the wisdom exceed anything your enemies can produce.
