Psalms 146:6

Psalms 146:6
Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:

My Notes

What Does Psalms 146:6 Mean?

God is identified by two attributes: creative power ("which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is") and perpetual faithfulness ("which keepeth truth for ever"). The one who made everything also keeps his word forever. Power and reliability are united in the same God.

The comprehensive creation list — heaven, earth, sea, and everything in them — covers all three domains of the ancient cosmos. Nothing exists outside God's creative work. The God you're trusting made the entirety of the physical world, which means his resources for helping you are literally unlimited.

The phrase "keepeth truth for ever" (shomer emeth l'olam) means God guards, preserves, and maintains his truth permanently. "Truth" here includes faithfulness, reliability, and promise-keeping. The God who is powerful enough to make everything is faithful enough to keep every promise. Neither attribute exists without the other.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Which do you struggle to trust more — God's power or his faithfulness?
  • 2.How does knowing the Creator is also the promise-keeper change what you bring to him in prayer?
  • 3.What situation in your life needs both the power of the one who made the sea and the faithfulness of the one who keeps truth?
  • 4.How does this verse serve as an antidote to both fear (he's powerful) and doubt (he's faithful)?

Devotional

The one who made heaven, earth, and sea — all of it, everything — is the same one who keeps truth forever. The hands that built the universe are the hands that guard his promises. Both are true about the same God.

This pairing matters because power without faithfulness is terrifying, and faithfulness without power is useless. A God who can do anything but can't be trusted is a tyrant. A God who is trustworthy but can't deliver is a sympathizer. Neither is worth your worship. But a God who created everything and keeps truth forever — that's a God you can stake your life on.

The creation list is comprehensive on purpose. Heaven — what's above you. Earth — what's beneath you. Sea — what terrifies you. Everything in them — what fills your world. All of it was made by the God who keeps truth forever. His creative power and his faithfulness share the same source.

When you're wondering whether God can handle your situation, remember: he made the ocean. When you're wondering whether God will keep his word, remember: he keeps truth forever. Not sometimes. Not mostly. Forever. The most powerful being in existence is also the most reliable. Let that be the foundation of whatever you're facing today.
