“A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 27:1 Mean?
David opens Psalm 27 with three declarations about God — light, salvation, strength of life — each followed by a rhetorical question that expects the answer: no one.
The LORD is my light — illumination in darkness, clarity in confusion. Whom shall I fear? No one, because the light exposes every threat and reveals the way forward.
The LORD is my salvation — rescue, deliverance, safety. Whom shall I be afraid of? No one, because the one who saves is standing right beside me.
The LORD is the strength of my life — the fortification, the stronghold that sustains daily existence. Of whom shall I be afraid? No one, because the foundation is unshakeable.
The psalm was likely written during a period when David had real, physical enemies. The confidence is not naive optimism. It is the settled conviction of someone who has been threatened, hunted, and surrounded — and has found God sufficient every time.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Which role of God — light, salvation, or strength — do you need most in your current season?
- 2.How does David's confidence come from experience rather than theory?
- 3.What specific fear would shrink if you set it next to who God is?
- 4.How can you make 'whom shall I fear' a daily declaration rather than a Sunday concept?
Devotional
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The answer is no one. Not because there is nothing threatening. But because the one standing with you outweighs everything standing against you.
Light. In a world full of confusion and darkness — where you cannot see the path, where the next step is unclear — God is the light. He does not just show you the way. He is the way.
Salvation. When the threat is real and escape seems impossible — God is the rescue. Not a strategy for rescue. The rescue itself.
The strength of my life. Not just occasional strength for occasional crises. The strength of your entire life — the daily sustaining power that holds you upright when everything pushes you down.
David was not writing from a comfortable study. He was writing from a life of pursuit, betrayal, and danger. And from inside that life, his conclusion was: whom shall I fear?
What are you afraid of right now? Name it. And then set it next to the one who is your light, your salvation, and your strength. Does the fear still hold?
